Entrusted families have goals that are both deep and broad. They're less interested in preparing their families to be rich and more interested in preparing them to manage, sustain, and carry on a rich legacy.

This was a great read. So many books focus on the strategies for estate planning that pass the most amount of wealth possible to the beneficiaries. They rarely focus on preparing the beneficiaries to receive the wealth. The authors of this book recognize that without preparation, inherited wealth can do much more harm than good. It certainly changed my perspective on inherited wealth. I found this book to be surprisingly engaging for such an inherently boring topic.

A Learning Experience

This book is amazing. It is written so anyone can understand it. "Entrusted" is a must read for individuals, families who want to pass their legacies on to their family in the right way. It is an essential tool for estate planning. I have learned so much and I will go back and read it again. The authors have given a gift to all of us. I am using these books for presents for my family, attorneys and advisers.

Great for Multi-level ESL

I had trouble figuring out what to do to teach a multi level ESL class. In this book, the vocabulary is so diverse and detailed that even the higher level students have something useful to learn and it's still not over the head of the lower levels. However it is almost pure vocabulary learning with a bare minimum of dialog activity. You'd have to supplement this with something else like the Word by Word workbook for practice and reinforcement. Also may need a supplemental book that focuses in on grammar. If your class is level specific, the Side by Side book for your level or Foundations for ESL Literacy would be my advice. BTW both are by the same pair of authors. I think Molinsky and Bliss are demigods of ESL!

About the Author
Mike Barrett has been helping people do better on standardized tests since he was in high school. In college, he worked briefly for Kaplan but left when it became clear to him that the Kaplan method was irreconcilably different from the way he naturally thought about the test. A few months after Mike graduated from college with a degree in linguistics, his younger brothers needed help with the SAT, so he taught them his approach to the test. Word of their success spread throughout their high school, and Mike was soon offering informal SAT tutoring to a few dozen of his brothers' friends. One of those students recommended to Mike that he set up his own SAT preparation company. He thought about that for a couple of weeks and decided to pursue it. Since then, Mike has used a variety of channels to help tens of thousands of students with the SAT, PSAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, ISEE, and SSAT. He regularly travels to work with students all across the United States, and consults with students all over the world through Skype. He speaks at live events as well, and is available for booking. Mike's SAT strategies are so different from the traditional approach because he analyzes standardized tests from the ground up, rather than simply assuming that they cover the material they claim to cover. In other words, most SAT tutors and courses teach the same math, reading, and writing skills that you learn in high school, because they take the College Board's word then it claims that the SAT is a test of college readiness. But Mike has looked carefully at large numbers of real SAT questions, and has determined that they have almost no similarity at all to the kinds of questions that teachers ask in school. According to Mike, SAT questions rely on very basic concepts but present them in very strange ways. So students who want to improve their test scores shouldn't waste time re-learning what they've already learned in school - instead, they should learn how the SAT actually works, so they can take their existing knowledge and leverage it into a higher score. the Black book and the Blue book

I bought this book for my kids along with the so called Blue book, the College Board's official SAT book, to help them get ready for the SAT. I was impressed by the title of this book.

This book lays out a very clear and concise plan-of-attack for every single part of the SAT. My kids mostly needed help with the reading and the math, and they said this really helped. They're both good students but they were having a hard time getting SAT scores that matched their grades in school. They also said this book was faster and easier to read than they were expecting it to be, because it's pretty thick considering that there are no practice tests in it.

And that's why you should get the College Board's blue book too if you really want to maximize the effectiveness of this Black book. The black book is all about making sure you work with real SAT questions. Which you can only get from the blue book, because only the College Board is allowed to print real SAT questions. I had bought a lot of other books from Kaplan, Princeton, and so on, and my kids now told me I should have just gotten these two books from the beginning and we could have saved a lot of time.

At first I was only going to give 4 stars because there are no practice tests, but I decided to go with 5 because it's actually better that this book insists on working with real test questions, which can only be found in another book. That way the kids know for sure that the strategies from this book will work on real SAT questions like the ones they'll see when they take the real test.

Bottom line is that they haven't taken the test again since I bought these books, but they've done practice tests and say they improved a lot. That wasn't the case with the SAT books they were using before. They're happy now, so I'm happy.

If you are really serious about the SAT

If you are really serious about Passing the SAT with a 2000 or higher, this is the book.

A summary of what you are getting:

Confidence, because it takes away all the uncertainties from the SAT;
Strategies, knowing exactly how to approach the questions;
Knowledge related to the type of questions and their patterns.

Confidence:

The Math Tool Box for example reviews every single subject that might appear in the Test. The author explains every concept clearly. Besides he goes through a whole section using not only the concepts in the tool box, he also picks the "most difficult questions" in the Math Section from the Blue Book.

Strategies

In the Essay Section, the strategies are spelled out clearly. For example, he recommends that one takes a position for or against the Thesis spelled out in the question. Then you divide the Essay in five sections...when you buy the book you will see for yourself.

Knowledge related to the types of questions and their patterns.

Anybody who knows Music will tell you, chords and theories are made from patterns (think of the Cycle of Fifth for example). Michael does the same thing in the Black Book. In the Reading Section for example, he demonstrates how the right answer is always in the body of the text.

As a trained teacher and a CPA, I live in Toronto, Canada, I bought the Black Book and the Blue Book from the College Board in order to train my daughter for the PSAT and the SAT. Being hands on, I read and applied all the instructions from the Black Book as a test drive before passing the knowledge to my daughter, the Black Book works like a charm. Using previous Tests from the Blue Book, my daughter consistently pulled between 2100-2300 in practice.

In Summary, this book is worth its weight in Gold. I don't know whether there are better books on the market because this was the only book I bought and will NOT buy any additional book for the SAT. People might feel or think some instructions are repetitive, the reason is simple: The author wants to drill the principles into our head, making such principles a second habit. I highly recommend the Black Book

A MUST for SAT Prep

If my family could have afforded a private tutor, I would have gone that route. Instead, I found myself on my own and completely
overwhelmed with SATs. Every standardized test prep book I've read (and I've read quite a few) has left me feeling over-stressed and under-confident. They make me feel like--regardless of how smart I am or how well I've done in school--I'm about to get spanked by an unbeatable test. So, I was very surprised when the Black Book told me I didn't need to memorize vocabulary words, or do a lot of other stuff that I saw in other books. Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical. And then I read page 39: "The 'Big Secret' of the SAT".

Since the Black Book arrived a week ago, I have done a complete 180. This book takes away that overwhelming feeling and--as you spend more time learning the rules--replaces that feeling with one of confidence. This book shows you where to focus your time. I'd also add that it's well-organized, easy to move through without your eyes glazing over, and is the next best thing to having a personal coach right next to you. I highly recommend this book for anyone prepping for SATs.

For a long time the group was also responsible for operating the machines and application programming. In my opinion, this connection was very e?cient: ?rst, because a beam diagnostic system has to place powerful tools at the operators’ disposal; second, because data evaluation and presentation of results for machine operation demand application programs which can be handled not only by skilled experts. On the other hand, accelerator developments and improvements as well as commissioning of new machines by specialists require more complex measu- ments than those for routine machine operation. A modern beam diagnostic system, including the software tools, has to cover these demands, too. Therefore, this book should motivate physicists, constructors, electronic engineers, and computer experts to work together during the design and daily use of a beam diagnostic system. This book aims to give them ideas and tools for their work. I would not have been able to write this book without a good education in physics and many discussions with competent leaders, mentors, and c- leagues. After working about 40 years in teams on accelerators, there are so many people I have to thank that it is impossible to mention them all by name here.

Timothy Shriver is a social leader, educator, activist, film producer, and business entrepreneur. He is the third child of Eunice Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics. As chairman of the Special Olympics, he serves more than three million athletes in 180 countries. He cofounded and currently chairs the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the leading research organization in the United States in the field of social and emotional learning. Shriver earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, a master's degree from Catholic University, and a doctorate in education from the University of Connecticut. He lives in Maryland with his wife and five children.

On my flight from DC home to LA last night I read Fully Alive. It is a powerful book that Tim has written. Breaking the “code of silence” about Rosemary opens one’s eyes to the shame that is associated with intellectual disabilities, both from the individual’s prospective as well as their loved ones. Tim’s vulnerability, insight and honest hopefully will remind this world that perception is not always reality. And IF we looked at other peoples similarities versus their difference the world would be a greater place.

At times, I had to take a break from the book because of the rawness of the story, but then 10 minutes later was pulled back because of the excellent writing. I hope others will read this book and find it as meaningful as I did. It has me wanting to join the fight against intolerance

This is one of the best "Kennedy" books I've ever read

This is one of the best "Kennedy" books I've ever read. Like the rest of the world, I greatly admired Tim Shriver's late mother, Eunice. In my eyes, the woman was a saint. Reading this book, I don't know where Eunice Shriver got her qualities from - because she clearly didn't inherit any of her goodness from either of her parents. Joe and Rose Kennedy couldn't accept, or love, their oldest daughter. The reason being - Rosemary wasn't perfect. She was all of age 12 - when her parents sent her far away, in another state, to a boarding school for the feeble minded. It's heartbreaking to read one of the letters Rosemary wrote to her cold mother. It's obvious Rose Kennedy never bothered to write her own daughter. Rosemary may have been "slow" but she was not disabled - at least not until Joe Kennedy made her disabled. Unbelievably, after Joe Kennedy destroyed his beautiful daughter with his forced lobotomy, she became dead to him. He sent her thousands of miles away from the Kennedy's, and never saw her again. Rose Kennedy shunned their daughter as well. The Kennedy parents even lied to their other children about their sister's whereabouts. I was reduced to tears a few times reading Tim's book. I'm glad I read Fully Alive because I've always wondered about Rosemary. I thought this was a beautiful tribute to her. Tim Shriver is an outstanding writer and seems full of kindness and compassion for people. I couldn't put the book down. Kudo's to Tim Shriver.

The Secret and Exceptional Life of Rosemary Kennedy....

This beautifully written courageous memoir authored by Timothy Shriver is a tribute to his late aunt Rosemary Kennedy (1918-2005), and thoughtfully raises awareness of the history, stigma, misinformation associated with people having physical and intellectual disabilities, while at the same time celebrating their humanity.

It is good that the term "mental retardation" is no longer used. This was not the case in 1941 when psychosurgery was a popular method to correct defective brain conditions and behavior problems. Joe Kennedy agreed to a prefrontal lobotomy for his oldest daughter Rosemary, who was then 23, and living in a Wisconsin Catholic boarding school for "exceptional" children. Rosemary was academically behind, and lacked the emotional maturity of a typical woman her age. Beautiful as her sisters, she attended social functions with family members on occasion, and never deserved to be labeled as retarded. The angry tantrums and outbursts she had were of great concern to her parents.

It was a fact that the ambitious Joe Kennedy had extremely high standards for his 9 children. They were expected to engage in civic and political pursuits with the goal of the US Presidency for his sons, there were few exceptions. Shriver suggests Rosemary did not fit her fathers ideal, or meet his lofty expectations, and was unable function well in the busy competitive Kennedy family environment. There may have been a possibility of an undiagnosed mental disorder. Shriver writes with understanding and compassion, readers will draw their own conclusions about the treatment of Rosemary by her parents.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver brought Rosemary to her home for family visits, her children knew their aunt well. "Camp Shriver" (1962) opened on her Maryland farm for disabled people. In 1968 Eunice's vision to advocate and provide competitive sporting events for people with physical and intellectual disabilities became the Special Olympics. Currently, Timothy Shriver is the Chairman of the Special Olympics that serve people with disabilities in 40 countries worldwide. Great photos included.
