About the Author

Amos Richmond is Professor Emeritus at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, and Founding Director of the Jacob Blaustein Institute for Desert Research, Sede Boker, Israel where he established the Micro-Algal Biotechnology Laboratory. 

Qiang Hu is Professor in the College of Technology and Innovation, and Senior Sustainability Scientist at the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University. He is also co-director of the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation. Professor Hu has over 25 years of experience in fundamental and applied research on algae in topics ranging from photosynthesis, biosynthesis of lipids and carotenoids, growth physiology of high-density algal culture, photobioreactor system design, and application of algal mass culture technology for biofuels and chemicals, and for environmental bioremediation.

This manual is designed to provide an "instant laboratory" to accompany lecture courses in introductory hydrogeology, groundwater hydrogeology, or groundwater. With its "no frills" format, this manual provides a convenient and affordable way to expand a typical three- hour lecture course into a four-hour lab course.

This manual is designed for use in the laboratory portion of an undergraduate course in hydrogeology or groundwater engineering. At CSM, these exercises are used in a three-hour lab that accompanies three lectures per week for one semester.

Most of the lab exercises can be used in any sequence, but they should be coordinated with lectures because they both supplement and complement lecture topics in hydrogeology. Two of the labs should be done in a laboratory that has water and sink drains, where you will be working with apparatus to measure hydraulic properties of porous media. One lab period will be spent observing an aquifer test in the field.

Several of the labs incorporate tasks that are best performed on personal computers, and the three contaminant labs are best run in a computer lab unless students have portable computers. Data files are provided on the enclosed CD that can be input to spreadsheet programs for easier calculation. The numerical model PARTICLEFLOW (used in Lab 15) requires a computer.

The final labs consist of an extended problem that should be spread over three lab periods. There are two choices of problems for this capstone mini-project: (1) The Seymour Hazardous Waste Site problem is a structured series of three labs that deals with the hydrogeology of a contaminated aquifer in the humid midwestern United States; (2) the Groundwater Basin Analysis is a quite open-ended problem, with emphasis on determining the interaction of surface water and groundwater in an arid area and predicting the future of irrigation in the basin.

Some of the exercises used in the Manual have been so modified over the years that it's difficult to recognize their origins, but parts of some of the exercises are based on material from colleagues at CSM and Stanford University. I thank the students and teaching assistants who helped test and refine these exercises. The Manual was improved considerably by helpful criticism provided by Professors Regina M. Capuano, University of Houston; David Huntley, San Diego State University; James A. Saunders, Auburn University; H. Leonard Vacher, University of South Florida; and several anonymous reviewers.

A complete hydrogeology course should include a lab as well as lecture. Until now, faculty members have been forced to develop their own custom lab manual, as no commercial manual was available. I was excited to learn of Keenan Lee's plans to publish a hydrogeology lab manual, and I was especially pleased when he invited me to contribute lab exercises from the Seymour Recycling Corporation hazardous waste site.

Hydrogeology is best learned through a hands-on approach. The material in this lab manual, in combination with the end-of-chapter problems found in textbooks, will aid students in developing a deeper appreciation for the science and art of hydrogeology.

The physical and chemical processes that govern groundwater flow and contaminant movement in the subsurface have remained unchanged through time. Our understanding of these processes, however, and our philosophy about which processes should be incorporated into a course in subsurface hydrology, change over time. Two areas that have certainly gained much attention from academicians and practitioners alike during the last ten years are contaminant transport and computer modeling. When Keenan asked me to contribute some exercises on these two topics, I was grateful for the opportunity. I realize that only a few hydrogeology textbooks include detailed material on contaminant transport or on computer modeling, but contaminant transport theory and application commonly comprise up to half of the material in a university course in subsurface hydrology. Some departments offer two semester courses: a traditional course in hydrogeology and a follow-up course in contaminant transport.

The three new contaminant transport labs, along with the exercises for the Seymour hazardous waste site, are intended to complement today's hydrogeology courses. Each of these laboratory exercises also includes computer modeling.

I would like to thank Dr. Paul Hseih, of the U.S. Geological Survey, for providing the model PARTICLEFLOW used in Lab 15. This model is very simple to use, but it is considerably more complex behind the computer screen. Special thanks also go to Kyle Murray, a doctoral student at CSM, for designing the slug-test exercise and for critiquing the contaminant-transport exercises. Finally, Keenan Lee greatly improved the user-friendliness of these new exercises by applying his wealth of teaching experience to the original drafts.

NOTE TO USERS OF THE FIRST EDITION

The manual now contains 21 lab exercises, six of which are new. The new labs include two regional aquifer studies, one in Colorado and one on the Gulf Coast, one aquifer-testing lab using slug tests, and three contaminant-transport labs dealing with use of tracers to determine aquifer and contaminant parameters and modeling retardation, biodegradation, and aquifer heterogeneity.

All material in the first edition is retained in the second edition, although some of it has been moved to the enclosed CD. One original lab exercise, all supplemental problems, and three of seven appendices have moved to the CD.

About the Author

Paul Trewhela is a long-time South African activist who worked in underground journalism with Ruth First and edited the underground journal MK, Freedom Fighter during the Rivonia Trial. He was a political prisoner in Pretoria and the Johannesburg Fort for being a member of the Communist Party�from 1964 to 1967. Since becoming an exile in England, he has been the coeditor of Searchlight South Africa and publishes on South African politics.

Excellent book telling a part of history

Excellent book telling a part of history, that is not very well-known. The south-african ANC and namibian SWAPO is best known as liberation movements that fougt for liberation og the south-african and namibian people.
This narrative is not the all the truth, Trewhela shows.
ANC and SWAPO were liberation movements, who fought for the liberation for the people og South-Africa and Namibia. But both movements were controlled by stalinists in the South African Communist Party (SACP).
This meant, that the political line of these movements were directed and adapted to the foreign policy of the USSR in the Cold War.
Sufficient ressources were not used to fight the apartheid-regime in South Africa, but instead channeled into supporting the prosovjet MPLA in Angola.
This created in 1984 a riot among ANC-militants that was met with fierce resistance from the ANC-leadership and resulted in imprisonments and deaths in ANC-governed prison camps in Angola. .
Paul Trewhelas deals with this important part of the history of the ANC and thus demystifies the gloryfying of ANC and SWAPO.
The history of ANC and SWAPO serves to a better understanding of why both movements have failed in their attempt to create socialism after coming to power in South Africa and Namibia.

His mission in life is To Chart the Course, Pave the Pathway, and Light the Lane for Others to Eclipse My Own Success in Leadership.' Miles earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Oral Roberts University (he is a classically trained violist, violinist, and composer) and a Master's in Business Administration from the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University. His expertise in the business management field includes in depth experience in accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, servant leadership, small-business management, and macroeconomics. Miles obviously has the skills to advise us on career planning and how to be agile, adapt to ambiguity and develop resilience.

They neither pretend that change isn't happening nor allow the need for constant adaptation to overwhelm them. Generation Flux is agile and resilient, quick to pivot away from unsuccessful strategies and tough enough to handle setbacks.... They are not afraid to fail, since failures are inevitable, and adaptation requires failure.'

On the premise the every job is temporary Miles explains the concept of the cycle: Prepare for a job>getting a jog>working a job>keeping a job>leaving a job>preparing for a job etc. He addresses the myth of life-long employment and retirement and the changes in the job market and the business model that have altered the way we approach work by touching on vanishing jobs, income inequality, government regulation and labor markets. Our current obsession with education that doesn't prepare us for work, and the need to leave these behind and emerge into the Generation Flux modality. Many of the subjects Miles addresses are controversial and the more they at first rise our dander the more impressive is his explanation for the need to be flexible and re-think our mode of employment and career choices> He doesn't stay with generalities (though those are very impressively shared) but gets down to the details of resumes, negotiating offers, and going after our dream job ... and making that happen.

This is a book of wisdom that will benefit every age group - with an emphasis on those first seeking employment all the way to decision making for the CEOs etc. Well worth reading and becoming adaptable for success. Grady Harp, February 15

New Skins for New Wine

Miles Anthony Smith has produced another fine publication helping people realize success in their careers. Following his first effort, "Why Leadership Sucks," where he described the necessary path for leading others, he now submits a treatise to assist the generations who have followed the baby boomers in the new challenges of their own career advancement. The product includes an analysis of the problem facing people starting out and gives them a practical way of embracing the changes that have countered the traditional way we think of employment.

His viewpoints on education may irritate some; but the avoidance of debt, something he truly believes in, makes a lot of sense in the support of alternative methods of training. Likewise, the idea of several short careers rather than one long one will, I believe, become over the next thirty years, the new normal.

His charts, tables and quotes are invaluable in stressing his main points. With them he gives compelling evidence that the past view of a career has been altered and, instead of fighting this change, he urges us to embrace it. Complete with practical steps and a variety of options, this testament will stand as a beacon for the unemployed and underemployed who are frustrated with using old skins to hold new wine.

Great Analysis of the Current Confusing Job Market Millenials Are Face With

"Generation Flux" is a "What Color is Your Parachute?" adapted for the constantly unpredictable (and let's face it) pessimistic job market that is out there for job seekers. In particular, this book is geared for Millenials who are struggling to adapt to the job market after the "good old days" where you can find one job and life was pretty much set. Miles Anthony Smith does a great job of showing the reality of the job market: declining jobs overall declining wages, outsourcing, reduced funding for colleges, increasing doubt about colleges, and the need to adapt to changing times. This was the first book that really just laid it out there and said what needed to be said! Smith delves in many areas (freelancing, marriage, entrepreneurship) that are not traditionally covered in a "job search" book. The style and tone is also different as well. The author uses direct, first-person language rather than speaking from a third-person as a career "expert" who hasn't experienced the same issues they are talking about.

First How-To Book for Implementing Big Data & IoT Projects

This book fills a gap for organizations looking to gain value from Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT). There are reports that come out from time to time about companies struggling to find value from Big Data or projects not proceeding beyond a Pilot phase. At the same time, there are many organizations that get tremendous value from the emerging technologies that underpin these concepts. The disconnect between organizations is become some have taken the right approach to use these technologies - solve a problem, while other organizations often are using it as a solution looking for a problem.

This book provides a very prescriptive methodology on how to become the former organization as opposed to the latter. While not every organization uses this same approach, it will get you to the end result, and it will help avoid some of the pitfalls that may come up along the way. For example, there is often a question of how these new technologies integrate with existing technology. Or where will the skills come from?

The methodology that the book provides is based on the best practices of Information Architecture so it can provide value even outside the realm of Big Data and IoT. That being said, some of the value of the book is walking through examples of the methodology being used with Big Data and IoT use cases and examples.

I think the combination of Information Architecture and Big Data/IoT is the unique value that the book provides but I would still like to see it go further. I'm not sure the best way to do that (more examples, real world case studies, a little deeper content) but I think it would make the great message even more impactful.

If you are looking at embarking on a Big Data/IoT journey, you need to read this book. It will provide a lot of clarity up front and help you avoid some of the pitfalls that other organizations have encountered. I have seen the outcome of this approach work at organizations so I know it's not based on theory but the outcome of many successful projects.

This book aims to show you how to implement a Big Data and Internet of Things project, with the subtitle “Enterprise Information Architecture for A New Age”.

This book guides you through the steps required to analyse and extend an existing architecture (based on a data warehouse), to one involving Big Data. The content is project/analysis focused rather than technical.

The book is targeted at “... enterprise architects and information architects, as well as anyone tasked with designing and building these solutions or concerned about the ultimate success of such projects”. Some knowledge of IT systems/architecture is needed, since various terms are used without being defined (e.g. third normal form).

The book is relatively small, containing around 180 working pages, split over 8 chapters.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Big Data Solutions and the Internet of Things

The book opens with a look at how we arrived at Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT), giving some history, and explaining that much existing technology is still appropriate in new solutions (e.g. databases). The importance of getting business buy-in is emphasised for successful projects, else the errors of the past may repeat with the newer architectures.

Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and data marts are discussed, outlining their advantages and disadvantages, before noting that increasing volumes of unstructured data required a new approach, involving NoSQL databases and Hadoop. NoSQL databases store data that doesn’t map neatly into the traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS). The 4 main types of NoSQL databases are outlined (i.e. key-value, column, document, graph), before looking at scalability and high availability.

Hadoop is the most popular Big Data platform. The importance of Google’s technology papers is noted in the development of Hadoop’s distributed file system (HDFS), and its distributed parallel programming algorithm (MapReduce). Next, many of Hadoop’s popular tools are highlighted (e.g. Hive, Sqoop). It’s expected that a growing number of sensors and devices will provide steaming data, this is the heart of the Internet of Things. This voluminous data will drive Big Data processing.

The chapter ends with an overview of the methodology for developing and deploying projects (this is what this book is really about). The popular ‘The Open Group Architectural Framework’ (TOGAF) model is briefly examined, noting it forms the basis of the authors’ own methodology – which is then outlined (with each of the 7 stages forming a subsequent book chapter).

This chapter provides a useful overview of the history and drivers of IT systems, culminating in the current Big Data and IoT systems. The iterative methodology for developing and deploying projects is outlined, showing you what to expect from the rest of the book. In essence the book is about defining the current system, defining your required system, and then taking steps to bridge the two.

The chapter is generally easy to read, with helpful diagrams to support the text. It touches a wide-range of topics but only in a cursory manner. Various vendor products are identified in passing. Some knowledge of IT systems/architecture is needed since various terms are used but not defined (e.g. ACID, named node) – perhaps links to further information could have been included. These traits apply to the whole book.

Conclusion

This book aims to show you how to implement a Big Data and Internet of Things project, and succeeds. It contains details of the steps to undertake to analyse and extend an existing architecture (based on a data warehouse) to one based on Hadoop technologies. The emphasis is on project planning and analysis rather than technology.

It is easy to read, with good explanations, and useful diagrams to support the text. The outline agendas and questions included should prove useful in creating your own systems. The book is based on a seven-step methodology, which itself is based on the popular ‘The Open Group Architectural Framework’ (TOGAF).

Many sections can be read without reference to Big Data and IoT, in which case it reads like a good traditional system analysis book, except it’s more agile and less comprehensive - since various steps in traditional methodologies are omitted. Undoubtedly the book oversimplifies the details, but does so to provide an achievable approach.

Some knowledge of IT systems/architecture is needed to get the most out of this book, since various terms are used without being defined (e.g. third normal form, ACID, RDDs, named node). Perhaps links to further information could have been included - I note there is an appendix of references, but these are not annotated.

The book’s title in itself is misleading, this is a book largely about analysis and design. I suspect Big Data and Internet of Things were added because they’re the latest ‘must have’ technologies, and of course they sell...

I enjoyed this book, it took me back to my 1987 SSADM analysis course! The book should certainly help people analyse and design systems (not just Big Data ones).

I started reading The Clique when I was in the 7th grade, and now I'm in the 12th grade. These books have changed my life and I will forever be thankful to Lisi Harrison for writing them. She ended the books perfectly, EVERYONE needs to read them.
