this book steals the heart

'My Dearest Holmes' is a celebration of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's world-renowned detective and his ever-loyal sidekick. Set securely and masterfully in the world created by Conan Doyle, Rohase Piercy writes the characters as beautifully as if they were her own, telling the hitherto untold story behind their friendship as they solve the case of the Queen Bee, and finally revealing the truth behind Holmes' faked death and his return, through the eyes of Watson, Holmes' own Boswell.

I was lucky enough to find this book years ago, to have it recommended to me, and I instantly fell in love with it. The story is expertly crafted and presents an understanding of the characters that goes beyond those traits so well known to so many of us. Now it has been re-published and is available to a new, wider audience. Any fan of Sherlock Holmes with an open mind, and a willingness to accept there was maybe more to Watson's unfailing loyalty that could not be made public while they both lived, will adore this book just as much as I do.

My Dearest Holmes

I went out on a limb and bought this book because I will read anything well written that involves Sherlock Holmes.

It has turned out to be a delightful, surprisingly emotive read.

Rohase Piercy has taken on the role of editor to the late Dr John Watson's private, unedited, accounts of The Final Problem and The Empty House. Her writing style is beautifully descriptive and laden with character emotion that is neither over the top nor out of character (Holmes is just as reserved as ever). Set against the backdrop of a London, England that just two years ago passed an act making any form of homosexual activity or expression illegal and punishable by up to two years hard labour.

There are two story's, the first of which is the abrupt and alarming disappearance of a woman, her friend whom she shares lodgings with is distraught and commissions Sherlock Holmes to investigate. From there, the case twists, turns, and leads to some startling discoveries and a truly brilliant, unexpected conclusion. (A must read!)

The second is set during the years when Dr Watson is married to Mary Morstan and his relationship with Sherlock has become a little distant. This story is very emotional as it covers Holmes supposed death at the Reichenbach Falls and it's utterly devastating effects on Dr Watson's marriage, professional career and health.

I loved every word and would recommend it to any Sherlock & Watson fan who enjoy's a well structured plot, suppressed emotion and sexual connotation, a bond of friendship/ love like no other, and language very similar to the original text's of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Less romantic than angst-ridden

This is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche that offers one new mystery and a reworking of The Final Problem/The Empty House, both suggesting the idea of romantic tension between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

I don't know why I'm bothering to review this; that one-sentence summary is probably enough to decide the issue one way or the other for the majority of people. Still, for everyone else, I have to say that while this was by far not the worst Sherlock Holmes pastiche I've ever read - that would take some doing - it doesn't have a great deal to recommend it beyond the sexuality angle, either. It was basically Brokeback Mountain with detectives instead of cowboys. Please don't think I'm making a thoughtless generalization that gay = Brokeback, either - I mean that this seriously resembled Brokeback in all its angst-ridden, love/hate, I-wish-I-could-quit-you glory (although since it touches on The Empty House as well as on The Final Problem, it's not quite so depressing as Brokeback is). I didn't much care for the characterization, which isn't an uncommon complaint for me with pastiches, but given that the mystery is secondary to the character interaction here, it was more of a problem than usual (in particular, they kept harping on Watson's indiscretion with regard to his sexuality, which just irritated me given that in the official stories, Holmes is always quick to vouch for Watson's discretion when speaking to his clients. Also, Mycroft fans may not want to read this; he's vilified terribly). My other major complaint was how very, very prevalent the gay themes were. It's not that I didn't want them to be important, of course, given the premise of the story, but every single event was somehow tied to sexuality; every character was either gay or giving someone a hard time for being gay, and by the time the innkeeper at the Englischer Hof started hitting on Watson, it was getting ridiculous. As for the mysteries, the first was fairly par for the course, and the second managed to present enough new material that it wasn't too repetitive despite being a reworking rather than a new story, although it did occasionally lift a bit too much from the original. The ending helped in resolving a few things, and I was much more kindly inclined toward the book after the last chapter or so.

This all sounds very harsh, but I'm always quite hard on Sherlock Holmes pastiches (and yet I read an inordinate amount of them. My bookshelves display my masochistic tendencies admirably). For most people, I would imagine that the book isn't actually that bad, particularly if you like a good dollop of angst with your romance. I'd say it's more something to borrow than to buy, though, unless you enjoy collecting unusual books. Personally, I'm thinking I'll leave it out on my coffee table for unsuspecting visitors to flip through.

About the Author
Dan Petersen is a consultant in safety management and organizational behavior. He was responsible for creating the Graduate Program in Safety Management at the University of Arizona. He has held Director-level positions with Allstate, Nationwide and Industrial Indemnity, and Wausau Insurance where he was an Assistant Vice President. He was also on the faculty of Colorado State University and Arizona State University.

So my book didnt come in on time. I went to the public library and discovered a very old copy that was still the same as the newer edition. Find as old a copy as you can and save a buck or two.

oldie, which makes it NOT a goodie

The book I bought turned out to be Petersen's 3rd edition of Safety Management Techniques. Twenty years old. No good for my safety classes. Beware-------I found out the hard way that you MUST check and see which edition you are getting from a seller. The Fourth is the one you need in this instance.

Underground in “the literary” since the nineteenth century, the fight against enclosure resurfaces today amidst continuing capitalist accumulations and a renascent sense of the commons under globalization.

In The Commons we wander the English countryside with the so-called mad peasant poet John Clare, just escaped from an Essex asylum and walking the more than eighty miles to his home in Helpston; we pick wild fruit with anarchist Henry David Thoreau, also newly escaped from jail (for not paying his poll tax); and we comb the English Lake District, undermining William Wordsworth’s proprietary claim upon it, with a host of authors of Romantic Guides and Tours.

Resisting enclosure with each word, tearing down (intellectual) property’s fencing, wandering in search of new commons, new spaces outside property’s exclusive and excluding domain—The Commons veers in and out of history to find spaces of linguistic hope. What we have named, in less inspired moments, “allusion,” “borrowing,” or even (pretentiously) “intertextuality” is just this fact that poetry proves again and again: our languages are common. Shared. Un-enclosable.

The Commons is another installment of what Collis has called (half in jest) “The Barricades Project”—a broadly based, historically ranging test of the old adage that “poetry is the revolutionary act par excellence.” It includes Anarchive (2005) and will eventually continue in The Red Album. The Commons includes an introduction to “The Barricades Project,” written by Collis’ collaborators Alfred Noyes and Ramon Fernandez.

In Vancouver recently I had the chance to meet poet and professor Steve Collis, author of a book of poetry I quite liked years back, ANARCHIVE, and now here comes its sequel, THE COMMONS--really more of a semi-sequel, even that dreaded word "prequel" since it takes place centuries before the Spanish Civil War setting of the earlier volume.

But neither book is bound by history in any but the most ad hoc and helpful ways. Here we encounter the British poet John Clare as he struggles to maintain his sanity in a time of increased privatization and its concomitant loss of freedom. Clare was mad, we take it, for good reason, with a Laingian sense of the real. As the public sphere shrinks, like shadows approached by the prick of noon, Clare's mental state correspondingly waxes and wanes. Around him predators assume strange shapes--geese, hatches, foundries. For Collis, the world of poetry is a place in which "the commons," a free place of exchange and mutual association, still maintains a parlous grip on imagination. I always like it when people use the expression "free reign" where we used to say, "free rein," perhaps because the age of riding horses has passed us by, while on the other hand more despots reign over us than ever, so we're familiar with the reign--"thievery governments" as Collis says in a poem later in the book. In any case he expands from Clare into a larger world of Romantic poets moving hither and yon in a tragic search for self expression in a world of centralized capital clotting together like cream in the sun.

With the English and Spanish milieux of his last two books, Stephen Collis is like Woody Allen laying down his favorite scenarios in European outfits. And maybe THE COMMONS isn't quite a gripping or involving as ANARCHIVE, but the pastoral always has a free and easy charm about it that some mistake for laissez-faire. Not so Steve Collis, who makes us hungry for more in this saga. His tutelary spirits here, Alfred Noyes and Ramon Fernandez, assure us that the poet will next take us to revolutionary Paris for THE RED ALBUM, and somewhere Scarlett Johanson is waiting for Woody's phone call telling her the part of Charlotte Corday is hers alone.

Very worth the read if you love true Alchemy

For the true lover of the Art of Alchemy highly recomended See what true adepts thought to be important in the 1500 s . I found it truly inlightning. The translation is worth every penny thanks . Have seen other translations but this one is better fewer mistakes. Only one important thing was left out the symbles that were in the original are missing big mistake to leave them out. would have been nive to have more of the origional pics

full of insight , full of hope

Joseph Bentz is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of his very best books. It's true: God sometimes seems silent, and distant, and preoccupied, and slow-to-respond. In this book, as always, Bentz is unfailingly honest. But instead of whining and complaining, he helps all of us to wrestle with God's silence by putting it into its biblical context, expanding our understanding of the whys and hows, and showing us what we can do while we wait. Make no mistake: even though the topic is daunting, this book is surprisingly cheerful. The clear writing, fitting examples, practical helps, and great stories make this book a joy from cover to cover. And it will lead to breakthroughs. Recommended for anyone who ever worried about hearing the voice of God.

Not just answers but also the tools for hearing from God

Silence is a difficult concept for us to understand, especially when we really need to hear from God. Silent God teaches us to listen through the silence when God seems so far away- a concept I also explore in my book Direction: Discernment for the Decisions of Your Life. In his book, Bentz has not only given us answers to the question of God's silences, but also tools for hearing God in the midst of the noise of everyday life.

It appears that Dr. Kanovitz has outdone herself again. As a professor of constitutional law, and former user of her previous editions, the 14th Edition of Constitutional Law for Criminal Justice does not disappoint. As in her previous editions, this volume appears current and tailor made for the undergraduate student; particularly in the area of criminal justice; and specifically in the application of procedural criminal law. Of immense value to new students reviewing court cases for the first time is the inclusion of a case citation guide and sample case citations. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Jacqueline Kanovitz is an Emeritus Professor of the Brandeis School of Law where she taught for thirty years and served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs. She also taught at other law schools. She holds a J.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Louisville School of Law. She is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching and writing excellence and has been a co-author of this textbook since the first edition in 1968.
