An exceptionally fine brief introduction to an extremely complex subject

This outstanding brief introduction to science fiction (henceforth, SF) fills a real need for a short survey of the subject. There are many other excellent surveys of SF. I have in my library a number of very fine books on SF, all of which complement one another by looking at the subject from slightly different angles, including Brian Aldiss's Trillion Year Spree: The History of Science Fiction, Darko Suvin's Metamorphoses of Science Fiction, Adam Roberts's The History of Science Fiction (Palgrave Histories of Literature), Thomas M. Disch's The DREAMS OUR STUFF IS MADE OF: How Science Fiction Conquered the World, and Edward James and Farah Menlesohn's The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction (Cambridge Companions to Literature), and a much older but classic survey, New Maps of Hell. I also should mention Vivian Sobchack's Screening Space: The American Science Fiction Film, which provides the best overview of the SF film. No two of these surveys agrees completely with another, and none entirely contradicts another.

Seed's book is arranged around a few themes: space travel, alien encounters, technology, utopias/dystopias, time travel, and the field of science fiction studies. The book also contains, as most of the Very Short Introductions do, an excellent bibliography.

While most of the books I referenced above focus exclusively on SF books - or with the case of Sobchack's book, film - Seed focuses on both. He will write about THE FOREVER WAR on one page and Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS a couple of pages later. And I think this is appropriate. Today the various media cross pollinate that keeping them apart is a tad artificial. My only complaint is Seed largely omitting television SF from his book. Granted he had only a small number of pages to work with, but in the past twenty-five years some of the best SF has come from TV in shows like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and some of the STAR TREK series, not to mention SF lite like THE X-FILES.

Still, I strongly recommend this for anyone who wants to get an excellent take on the history of SF. I do not recommend that anyone wanting to know more about the field read only one or even two book. There are many ways of looking at the subject and each brings something different to the table.

A Very Short "Mega-text"

I would like to say I am delighted with this rich repository of titles of science fiction stories, novels, and films, but I am not. Unless their subject is minute, writers must make choices to allow room for detail, explanation, comparison, and argument, as the subject requires. Seed refuses to make these choices. He tries to build a "mega-intertext" such as he describes in Chapter 6. Therefore within the space of what used to be called a pocket book, he tries to examine major themes and methods of (all?) science fiction and cinema to date. He mixes categories, treating, for example, the city, cyborgs, and computers as subtopics of technology, but space ships elsewhere. He refuses to separate film from prose fiction, threatening the focus of every chapter. Wouldn't it have been more satisfying to devote three Oxford Very Short Intros to this topic, focusing on short fiction in one, long fiction in another, and film in a third, allowing for a lengthier discussion or more detailed comparison of at least a few exemplars? And come to think of it, what about the poem in this mode--Muir's "The Horses"? As if these problems weren't enough, the book is marred by bloated, indirect writing, as in the last sentence of Chapter 5.

This is an excellent overview and introduction to print and film science fiction. The emphasis is on Anglo-American science fiction but also considers widely translated authors such as Stanislaw Lem and Jules Verne. The author shows that ideas, plots, and themes of science fiction go much further back in history than most people think. The author also considers a wider range of books from the past that would be considered as science fiction if they were written today such as _The Purple Cloud_. Toward the end of the book there is a discussion of black and women science fiction writers who generally are not well covered in traditional discussions of science fiction. The book also discusses the peculiar sub-culture of science fiction fandom with it's clubs, magazines, and conventions.

Another entertaining collection

I'd rate this a 5 as it is a very entertaining collection of a lot of stories, but most of them are so short it's over right as you get into it. For those of you following the Dark Horse Aliens/Predator Omnibus collections, know that with this volume the Aliens side is starting to wind down. Mostly out of full length stories, Dark Horse includes a lot of short one-shots here instead.

Alchemy
Formerly a three issue, this is the story of a small colony founded when a ship crashed on a distant planet. It's got a religious theme, but not Christianity like Salvation & Sacrifice do. The art is a little odd at first, but it grows on you. The only thing that irked me was the ending. It's just so abrupt; a whole 4th issue could have easily been written at the time.

Kidnapped
This is an interesting and really entertaining story about a chestburster that carries some sort of disease and never reaches maturity. The reader follows several different groups of characters throughout the story, but never focuses on one main character. Again though, the ending is somewhat of a cop-out and comes very abruptly.

Survival
This is probably what I'd say is the gem of Volume 5. It's told from the perspective of a sick guy who's hallucinating and recalling the events that lead him to his current state. This is the final full-length story as the rest are all shorts.

Cargo
A lone smuggler is trapped on board a massive ship with an Alien. This sort of takes the Alien story into a crime/suspense sort of genre and it's an interesting spin on things.

Alien
A story about tribal alien creatures on a planet that hide from Aliens every night. Sort of a coming-of-age deal, but obviously a little different. I really enjoy the art and the design of the small alien guys.

Earth Angel
A story about a ship crash landing on Earth sometime during what looks like the 1960s and wreaking havoc briefly. Features a biker gang. It also tries stupidly to tie in with the films and become some kind of prequel.

Incubation
Actually the beginning story of Batman/Aliens #1. It's well done; great art by Bernie Wrightson. It's just kind of empty without the context of the real story following it.

Havoc
This is one of the better 2 issues that Dark Horse released. Oddly, each page is illustrated by a different artist, so it's got a strange feel to it. The story, being a sort of ghost story, fits with the artistic style though.

Lovesick
Kind of a dumb story about a chick, a little kid, and an evil scientist. The art is good and it's easy to follow and entertaining enough. The story itself is just kind of stupid.

Lucky
One man manages to survive an Alien infestation aboard a large ship. This would be a great full-length story; I'm disappointed that it's so short as it kind of hurts the overall impact.

Volume 5 is a very good entry in the series, but the non-stop shorts might be more well accepted by Alien fans and not a general comic reader.

Flawed, But Still The Best Aliens Omnibus Yet!

Aliens Omnibus Volume 5 Graphic Novel Review
Grade: A-
The Aliens Omnibus's have always been great, holding great hits like Salvation, Labyrinth, and Apocalypse in their four-colored pages, and Aliens Omnibus Volume 5 is no exception. It packs on the gore, the terror, and of course, our friends the Aliens.
The graphic novel has ten different Aliens comics, ranging from graphic novels to one-shots, with the three-issue or more graphic novels coming first. The rest of the collection are the one-shots and little eight-page fillers, and they're just about all good; the main problem I'd seem to find: the art.
The first story in the Omnibus is Alchemy, the tale of one lady's tale of survival against an evil priest and the Alien, and the horrors mankind can do to itself. The story is excellent, written by John Arcudi; the thing that kills the story is the art. It seems off, and the details aren't really there. The cover art is great though, and the first issue's cover is the cover of the Omnibus. (The Alien is making the weird Star Trek alien peace sign, right?) Alchemy is worthwhile, and the story is one of the best I've seen, so I guess I'll push up the grade to a solid B.
The next story, Kidnapped, once again has an excellent idea, penned by the great Jim Woodring, along with Justin Green, and the art by Francisco Solano Lopez if great; the problem lies in the execution of the comic. Somewhere along the line, the plot gets silly, and winds up being dumb. I did like the fact that it revolves around a "baby" Alien, or a chest-burster for once, but the story still gets a B-.
Survival, the last of the long arcs, had little expectations from me; I had better expectations for Alchemy and Kidnapped, yet, this one was actually pretty good. The art, though sketchy, was decent, and the plot, about a man hallucinating (or is he?) about the Aliens is really good, on a par with Labyrinth. There are no major problems with this one, and I'll say no more about the plot, it's that great. You could say it grows on you, its one of those tales. A-
Then comes the one-shots. Cargo I didn't really like, it just didn't really click. A man gets a surprise in the form of an Alien. C-
Alien, on the other hand, is fantastic. Though only twenty-something pages, it's one of the best ever. Period. A
Earth Angel is great too, and has a pleasant surprise at the end. A
Incubation was just O.K., nothing really special. It is fun to see the race of humanoids encounter the Alien though. B
Havoc is pretty good, with a decent plot, but what's unique about it is that a different artist draws every page! My favorite page? Sergio Aragones's all the way. A-
Lovesick is just O.K. too, the plot decent, the art nothing special. C
The last story, Lucky, is a tale of murder, mayhem, and the things people will do to get away from the dreaded Alien. I just wish this one had been longer than eight pages. A-
All in all, if you don't mind some art problems, this Aliens Omnibus is the best one yet.

Incomplete book

I was so frustrated with this book. It was fantastic -- and then it didn't finish. I have to buy another book to find out the ending. No way. I'm giving it two stars, because I really did enjoy the book up until the not-really-the-end. Too bad I won't find out what happens. Not buying anymore of this author's books.

Couldn't put it down!!!

I have never been much of a reader. I never can seem to find anything that captures my attention for long enough. I loved this book, because I already loved the characters from "The Bed She Made". I couldn't put "To Be Her First" & "The Bed She Made" down. I loved reading the story of "before". I was sucked in by the story and characters. It's inspired me to find similar books to these. Can't wait to read whatever Elicia writes next!

I felt like I was there with Journey and her friends

could not put this book down. The characters came to life instantly and I was transported back to the late 90's. I felt like I was there with Journey and her friends; I felt her pain and the emotions they experienced. This book is easy to read and well-written; it's not often you come across a book that you want to continue reading straight through the night! And when I finished, I immediately got the next one :-)

Exceptional Breadth of Coverage

Well written, clearly annotated, thorough, and full of detailed data on radars; there is a lot to recommend this book to the practicing engineer.
Sullivan's book covers an extremely broad swath of the world of microwave radar and makes an excellent desktop source. With the possible exception of the venerable but considerably larger (and heavier!) "Radar Handbook", no single volume covers the diverse topics this book does.
The first five chapters (along with chapter ten on pulse Doppler radar) form a ready-made semester-long text (with problems) on ground-based radar, proceeding from first principles and a brief historical note through subsystems, propagation effects, signal processing, and tracking radar. From there the book goes on to the more specialized topics of SAR/ISAR, automatic target recognition (ATR), airborne operation, STAP, and bi-static operation.
The illustrations and graphics are superior and set Sullivan's book apart: clear, easy to read, and clearly annotated (including citing the reference, when appropriate).
A feature I have found useful are the numerous tables showing "real-world" SAR operational and hardware parameters. These tables are quite detailed and thorough and set the book apart from other books in the field.
Another example of the book's thoroughness is the author's decision to include topics such as the effects of target translation and rotation on SAR imagery and to detail some of the work in the field in dealing with the phenomenon. As mentioned in the book, this represents some of the very latest research in the field on SAR/ISAR work.

Good Introduction, Poor "Advanced" Treatment

Having worked with the author over the years, it is no surprise to see the book endorsed politially, and focused almost exclusively on the work of a few.
Most of this book is on introductory topics and, on this, Sullivan shows his excellent ability to present intuitively simple explanations. However, the book is entitled "imaging and advanced concepts" which, when treated, reveal major shortcomings in the author's knowledge and scope.
Arguably, the worst chapter is Chapter 9 on SAR/ISAR Target Recognition. Here, after a brief remark on CFAR (for the record, in this basic term, "R" means Rate, not Ratio), the Adaptive Matched Filter development is copied in summary form and then wholly dismissed as being "beyond realistic computation, even for individual images." This allows the author to then present the one thing he does have knowledge of: old-fashoined single-pixel "kitchen sink" discrimination that has, sadly, developed into a basis for SAIP. After much pontification on this (including a deceptive presentation of artifically derived results), the author devotes only half of a page to "Other Target-Recognition Algorithms." In this section a short paragraph mentions one algorithm from decades of landmark work by Rihacek (in a disbelieving tone), and a second short paragraph simply lists some topics in another book by Borden.
For myself, a devoted radar expert and researcher, the emphasis and depth of this book is both sad and dismaying. The work is far more political than valuable, and should be avoided. While some of the introductory topics are well written, this is overshadowed by slant, incompleteness and, in some cases, deception (whether willful or not) in more advanced areas.

Excellent overview of current radar trends

The subject book is a "must have" for the practicing radar engineer. It provides an excellent summary of virtually all major topics in radar signal processing: basic techniques, bearing estimation, ISAR, theory of SAR processing, super-resolution, target recognition, pulse-Doppler/MTI and STAP! Topics are covered in a clear, in-depth manner. Dr. Sullivan's expertise shines in the middle chapters of the book covering imaging radar; I enjoyed the extensive treatment of current topics, especially the discussion on SAR super-resolution and target ID. Additionally, Dr. Sullivan's ability to relate "book topics" to real-world sensor applications is a big plus.

RUN the other way

This was a waste of time and money. Please do yourself a favor and skip this book. It's super short and the characters are childish and one dimensional. I hate to trash a book but if you are going to publish a book than come correct. This was just stupid. They were trapped together and now everyone assumes they are screwing? SERIOUSLY? Come on! I couldn't finish it. I want my time and money back. BTW I'm so over author expecting readers to pay for each chapter. write an entire book!

The storyline was incredibly farfetched. Who is threatened with the possibility of losing there job because the paparazzi is hounding them and who runs through the streets in bare feet.

I read the first installment and love it. The attraction between Matt and Penelope is strong, Penelope not too trusting with Matt, but feel the draw and can't help feel the love that is growing between the two. I like both character and I am looking forward in reading more.
