About the Author

Dr. Brian C. Smith founded Spectros Associates in 1992. He has practiced spectroscopy for over 30 years, and has worked for companies such as Bell Labs and Bio-Rad. Dr. Smith is also an experienced trainer and�thousands of people have benefited from his spectroscopy and software training. Dr. Smith is the author of Fundamentals of Fourier Transform Spectroscopy�and Infrared Spectral Interpretation, published by CRC Press, and Quantitative Spectroscopy: Theory and Practice, published by Academic Press. Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College, and graduated summa cum laude from Rochester Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Chemistry.

pretty good book for interpreting spectrum

This is not an introductory book on workings of FTIR.
However, the book contain many example spectrums of commonly encountered polymers. Each example shows the spectrum as result of the individual chemical bonds.
When mixing of chemicals prevents automatic spectrum search, the book is a good starting point for analyzing the chemical content.

A Comment From the Author

I apologize for rating my own book, but it was the only way I could get a comment placed on the book's webpage.
I feel compelled to respond, point by point, to the poor rating the reviewer from NY, NY has given my book.
Reviewer: "The representation of spectra is of very poor quality and appears as images printed on a dot-matrix printer or a plotter."
Response: All spectra were printed on a modern, 600 DPI, laser printer. All spectra are plotted in landscape format (parallel to the book's binding) to maximize the size of the spectrum for easy viewing. Peak positions are clearly marked, and the assignment of relevant peaks is included in a table at the bottom of each spectrum. The chemical structure and formula for each compound is clearly marked. I have given much thought to the format and layout of the spectra in the book to supply the most information in an easy-to-read format.
Reviewer: "Nowhere does the author provide an example of how to use his systematic approach to interpret spectra or expound on why these steps are critical."
Response: There are 33 problem spectra in the book. The solution to these problems, including a complete chemical structure and table with correct peak assignments, is given in Appendix II of the book (pages 208 to 242). Each one of these problem solutions is an example of the systematic approach to interpretation I discuss in Chapter 1, and the importance of the steps is expounded upon in detail in these problem solutions as well. Any reader who works through the problems will discover this.
Reviewer: "The author takes a "no math" approach and in addition to limiting the rigor of the material he makes several misleading statements in his explanation of molecular vibrations and vibrational spectra."
Response: There is plenty of math in the book, there are 16 equations in Chapter 1 alone, which support the discussion of RELEVANT theory. There is no calculus or matrix algebra in the book...intentionally. One does not need to know how to design a transmission to drive a car. By analogy: One does not need a knowledge of advanced mathematics to be able to interpret infrared spectra. I have included as much rigor as I think is necessary for the intended audience to be able to interpret spectra. I gladly refer readers to more advanced books if they want more details on theory. As far as technical errors are concerned, the entire book has been reviewed by several people in this field, and is as free of technical errors as I can make it. If the reviewer believes there are technical errors in the book, I would be happy to discuss those with him. My e-mail address is printed in the front of the book.
In Conclusion... Thousands of students have used this book in the short courses I teach for a living. Their response to the book is overwhelmingly enthusiastic and positive...and I have the course evaluation forms to back this up. Seasoned academics may not care for my approach to the subject, but my experience with my students convinces me that for its intended audience, this book serves its purpose well.

The best book I've ever read on IR interpretation!

I've been doing Infrared Spectroscopy for nearly 30 years and have read many books on the subject. I've found this book to be the best by far! It covers the important information without losing the reader in an endless myriad of details and complex chemistry which I've found to be the case with many other books. I have taken organic chemistry but am not an organic chemist. This book made it easy for me to learn to identify the important peaks and has made a significant difference in my ability to interpret spectra. I highly recommend it!

Read This Book Now!

A more accurate title for this book might be "Prudent Financial Management: How to Feel Good About Yourself When You Reach 50." Please read it all the way to the end (a mere 180 pages) before passing judgment on its values or wisdom.
This is the insider advice that a shrewd, experienced, brutally honest, and wealthy grandfather would give to his favorite grandchild upon graduation from college. I wish someone had explained all this to me when I was 22 or 25 or 30.

Now that I am well passed 50, I recommend this book to you in the hope it will contribute to the happiness of your life. Read it now; read it ten years from now and every decade following. You will appreciate its good sense more and more as years pass.

A good book with a poor title.

I still have the paper back copy of this book that I bought back in 1989. Its pages are worn from being read over and over.

The advice given in this book is good, common sense investing advice that will stand the test of time. The only times I have gotten in trouble with my investments is when I failed to follow his advice. Thanks in part to this book I was able to retire back in 1996 at the age of 56. I'm still retired and enjoying it. Two other books that helped me were "Work Less & Play More" by Steven Catlin and "Cashing in on the American Dream" by Paul Terhorst.

About the Author
Katie Sherrod is a laywoman in the Diocese of Fort Worth. She is an independent writer, video producer and commentator. She wrote and produced Women of the Table, a 20-minute documentary about ministries of both lay and ordained women in the Episcopal Church which premiered at the 2003 General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. She was given the Magadalen Award of the Episcopal Women’s Caucus at General Convention 2006. She has won several awards in newspaper, radio and TV including the Dallas Press Club Award for her 2001 PBS documentary Freedman’s Cemetery Memorial: A Place of Healing, narrated by Alfre Woodard; and the Exceptional Media Merit Award from the National Women's Political Caucus. She was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1987 for outstanding contributions in the field of communications, and named Texas Woman of the Year in 1989. She is married to the Rev. Gayland Pool, an Episcopal priest.

This is an outstsnding piece of literature! Thought-provoking, stirring, haunting, uplifting, spiritual...as well as beautifully written. I was/am so entranced with this work that I will read it repeatedly and be moved by new nuances in each story. This, to me, and all I have read or sent it to is a classic. Sincere thanks to the author, and publisher for bringing this to the masses.

About the Author

Frank E. Harrell, Jr. is Professor of Biostatistics and Chair, Department of Biostatistics, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville. He has developed numerous methods for predictive modeling, quantifying predictive accuracy and model validation and has published numerous predictive models and articles on applied statistics, medical research and clinical trials.�He is on the editorial board for several biomedical and methodologic journals. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and to the pharmaceutical industry. He teaches a graduate course in regression modeling strategies and a course in biostatistics for medical researchers. In 2014 he was chosen to receive the WJ Dixon Award for Excellence in Statistical Consulting by the ASA.�

Pretty Dang Good for a Math Book

I've only read one chapter in this book, but I think I can say that this is one of my favorite math books. My experience with it has almost been interactive because all the questions that I have are always answered either in the next sentence or in the footnotes. Regression Modeling Strategies is definitely a steal for whatever they are asking, if not for the amazing content and references, but for the number of pages and colored pictures alone. Writing this review is sort of funny because even if I was lying, it doesn't really matter since if you are reading this, you probably need it. The biggest downside to the book is the subpar cover; boring mustard color with text.

Wonderful Series!!

I just finished reading the third book in this series and loved it. The dynamics and chemistry between Anna and Finn was very hot. They first met when she arrived for a family vacation, he took her by surprise while she was photographing sighs on her way to meet her mother. Anna never suspected that he was the son of the man who her mother was living with, still there was something about him that drew her to him and he to her. They eventually begin a secret relationship because of their parents. They are getting closer every day, and she is the only one that he has really opened up to, she gets to see the real Finn. One day everything blows up and the sons and daughters of John and Robin leave to live their own lives. In this reviewers opinion this is a must read book. I also recommend the first two in this series. I never tell spoilers, as that ruins the book for others who haven't read it yet. I wish there was another book in this series. I am going to miss them and what happens next. If I could give it more than five stars I would, to me it is a ten star book. Ms.Master always delivers when she writes.

Great Chemistry

Finn and Annabel had great chemistry. I think of all the Hawthorne brother books this one was by far my favorite. I loved the fact that Anna and Finn decided to not play games and be honest with each other right from the start. I also liked the interactions with the other siblings and getting all sides of the "vacation". I wish the ending would have looked a little further into the future. It kept my attention and I didn't want to put it down.
Colleen, I loved this series but I must say that I am so curious as to what happens with these three couples. Do they all get married? Do they all have kids? Can we get a novella with a look into their future??
I highly recommend that everyone read about the Hawthorne boys. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unhappy family reunion

Annabel meets Finn when her mother insists that she and her sisters visit her in Montana. Finn is the son of the man her mother has been staying with, and Anna can't resist him. Anna and her sisters are devestated when her mother tells them she is selling the house they grew up in, and they leave Montana. Anna leaves with Finn and finds herself living with him in Portland. They haven't heard the last from their parents, and soon have news they never wanted to hear. Sizzling hot conclusion to a fantastic series, I loved these books!

Hoping it would only take a semester to understand his strange attraction and why he tormented her during high school, instead he realized that there was something more about Nyla, and something more to the way he felt. Now he must prove to her that she feels the same way about him.

One of the Poorest Written Books I've Read this Year. (D- Grade)

You would think with an appealing cover and equally appealing blurb, that the book itself would be well written. I'm sorry to say that Something More is a horribly written book. It's apparent no professional editing or copy editing has been done. I noticed this within the first few pages. The heroine is supposed to be an 18 year old college freshman, but she acts more like a 13 year old, whining brat with a personality of a wet noodle.

There's also non-stop info dumping and internal musings that need to go. There are multiple words used time and again and many instances of convoluted statements and made up words. And example is this statement that I had to re-read a few times to understand:

"Hiya, Nyla, the ussh?"

What in the world is a "ussh?" I assume it means the usual, but come on! If a word is invented but never explained, how would the reader know what it means?

But my favorite is: "He couldn't resist smearing his kisses all over her breasts, and her stomach." Smearing like butter or jam on toast? What?? How do you smear kisses? That's unbelievably not sexy or romantic and a fail as a writer.

Nyla, our heroine is so Mary Sue and naive. Also her so-called high school bully and eventual love interest, Jamison is full of contradictions. One minute he's an egotistical, mean snob who treated Nyla horrible in high school, but then they were really frenemies but then friends. So much confusions and back and forth wishy-washiness on this relationship.

This was written more like a first draft, and even then it should have been revised multiple times and edited before it was suited for publication. It's insulting to your readers, regardless if you're self published, not to have a professional editor. Expect a horrible review like this one I've given, not to be mean, but a wake up call to treat your writing as a profession, especially if you're playing in the big leagues and publishing your work.

One of the poorest written books I've read this year.

That was my involuntary reaction after agreeing to read Mia Castile's YA "Romance", `Something More'.

"How do I keep getting myself into these things?" I asked myself, sighing dramatically.

I had never read anything by Mia Castile before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. She seemed to have a good reputation as a writer, and...you know...she is a Hoosier!

Knowing that I didn't fall within her target market, I nonetheless dove into the story, hoping my manliness wouldn't get too diluted.

Then something amazing happened!

I really liked the story! (You know....besides the romantic stuff *)

But seriously, I found Something More to be a well crafted and interesting story. Mia Castile's writing style is both fluid and thorough, and you will find her characters both intriguing and realistic.

You feel the emotions of Nyla's angst as she fights falling in love, and Jameson's cockiness as he confidently woos her.

Personally, I fell in love with Nyla...ummm...you know....in a manly way.

I am totally impressed with Mia Castile and her story.

I would totally recommend this book to anyone that wants an intriguing and well written YA romance!

Not at all believable.

I bought this book based on the really great cover and the plot blurb.

Sadly the cover was the best part of the book.

I had a really hard time with this book. First of all, the stuff that Jamison did to Nyla (I hate that name) in school went beyond the kind of teasing a boy does to a girl he likes. What he did was bullying, plain and simple. The things he did were mean and vindictive. I have a hard time thinking that any self respecting young woman would be able to get past the things he did and want to be with him. I was annoyed at the way the book jumped around trying to justify the things he did. And even in the present day Jamison is not a likeable character. He is manipulative to both Nyla and Ethan. He jumps around from being a sad misunderstood guy who is trying to change, to a complete jerk. He was not at all likeable.

And Nyla...I would have bought her character as a high school girl. I had a harder time thinking of her being in college. She was bland. I hated the way she treated Ethan, who was a lot more likeable than Jamison.

I had a hard time believing that Nyla loved Jamison. It felt like she went from despising him to loving him all at once. I'm okay with a little suspension of disbelief, but their romance seemed forced. The book dragged a little too much for my taste. I found I was forcing myself not to skip ahead. For a short book it took me a long time to read because it just didn't hold my interest.

I think the author had a good idea for a story, but it needed more polishing. And a more likeable hero.

Dangerously Incorrect Math

I love the Pocket PQD for reference. When I learned this new addition was released I was so excited. However, after reviewing the calculations on the quick reference chart for rebreathing systems, I'm very disappointed and concerned. The math is wrong. Way wrong! This type of error is very dangerous to distribute and could cost an animal it's life. Shame on you, Mosby for not properly editing your material.

AMAZING pocket book

This is a small pocket book for veterinarian and veterinarian technicians. The book is very small but has many pages of great material. My boyfriend is a vet tech and I bought this for him, the second he saw it it blew him away. He loves it. The material is AMAZING. It assists him in his career which is great. We're buying this same exact book for his coworker who has been in the field for over 15 years, so it's not just a book for beginners. His coworker looked at this book and said the material was very useful and informative, even for her in a long time career. I am so happy to have bought this for my boyfriend. He loves it, and he uses the new terms he reads from it daily. I'm so proud of him and this book.

SOOOOO Happy I found this!!!

HOLY CRAP, THIS EXISTS?!?!?! This thing is freaking awesome! As soon as I randomly stumbled upon this, I immediately purchased it! It literally has EVERYTHING! I work in a vet and I am going to school to become an LVT as well, I am almost done, but every single thing I learned at school is all in this little book, its crazy! The only thing is, I wished it was a little larger and the covers were laminated to protect it a little more. This thing will definitely come in handy when I get ready for tests and if I forgot anything at work.

Clear overview about Happiness

Philosopher Daniel Haybron's short introduction to happiness is highly recommended! The author really knows his subject after several books and articles about the philosophy of happinesss and the good life. This is one of the first books to paint the whole picture that connects such concepts as happiness, flourishing, wellbeing and good life and explores their relations.
Haybron is also one of the few scholars of happiness, who knows both the theories, philosophical perspectives and empirical studies about happiness and good life.
This is the most accessible way to get an overview of happiness research and it is fresh and current.

Somewhat rambling, and no new key insights

Written by a philosophy professor, this book is wide ranging and probing in its exploration of the topic of happiness (and related topics), but unfortunately I didn't get much out of it. We get a knowledgeable tour of many trees, but without the benefit of a clear overall map or otherwise getting a sense of the overall forest. With some effort, the main broad conclusions I was able to draw were:

- We'll be most satisfied with our lives if we live them in accordance with our values.

- Those values will preferably be aligned with the way the world actually works, as well as our individual, human, and social natures. So our relationships with other people matter a lot, and 'good' personal attributes like virtue, empathy, integrity, character, responsibility, caring, etc. are important. We should also choose wisely as far as the people we spend time with.

- We need a balance between engaging activity and relaxation. Stress needs to be managed, and we need to be resilient so that we can handle inevitable tough times. It also helps to have a connection with nature and a general attitude of appreciation of what life offers (glass half full).

- We need enough money and material resources to have basic security, and some freedom and options as far as how we spend our time. Beyond that, money and material resources are of limited benefit. So choose your career carefully based on your interests, personality, and abilities, don't simply chase after money and status.

Of course, this is all fairly standard wisdom, so this book only reinforced what I already knew, rather than adding to or deepening my understanding. But perhaps others will get more out of the book than I did.

A Very Important Book

This book is one of the most important books I've ever read. It makes a really good case for the importance of happiness using rationalist, researched, and common sense examples.

I found myself thinking about happiness as the main goal in life more than I'd done before after reading the book. It's a great combination of classical philosophical views of how to live a happy life (virtue and whatnot) along with many practical examples such as pointing out that evidence that being out in nature produces happiness.

If you want to prevent yourself from living a life "deprived of beauty and wonder" (quoted from the book) or improve your ability to ponder the aforementioned "beauty and wonder" the VSI "Happiness" is a good start.
