About the Author
James Keating, PhD, is the director of theological formation in the Institute of Priestly Formation at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned his doctorate in Roman Catholic theology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Keating has done more than four hundred workshops on moral theology and spirituality nationally and regularly conducts retreats.

The #1 Book any Deacon needs, aspiring or already ordained

The Heart of the Diaconate is the first book any aspiring, or current, Permanent Deacon should have in their personal library. Deacon James Keating, Ph.D., has composed a classic in the spirituality of the diaconate in this concise, but very profound read.

This book is a lot like Keating’s previous book, The Deacon’s Retreat, in that it focuses on the interior life of the Deacon and how important this interiority is to his outward ministry. The difference, however, is what makes the book a must-have, namely that it has a preferential focus on the formation of aspiring Deacons and those who are in formation. While it doesn’t ignore the currently ordained Deacons by any means, there is special attention given to those who are experiencing the first whispers of the call to ordination.

Keating’s pen strokes mold the aspirant as a spiritual director would into the deeper echelons of discernment:

“To discern a diaconal vocation is to distinguish between the attraction to ‘help out’ around the parish and the weighty invitation from Christ: ‘Will you allow me to live my servant mysteries over again in your own flesh?’ Does one want to be a man who is living Christ’s own servant mysteries? This is the central question of discernment.”

Dr. Keating wastes no words by warning the aspirant that the journey he is embarking upon will not be easy. He asks, “Can a man who wants to aspire to Holy Orders withstand the fire of receiving God’s love and live to tell about it?” Certainly whoever picks up these pages and reads them with an open spirit to God’s call will be confronted with the realities and sacrifices that such a call requires.

What particularly caught my attention was his desire to see diaconal vocations come from younger generations. Under Canon Law, men are eligible to receive the sacrament of diaconal ordination after the age of 35. Keating’s hope is that at this age, God will not only call young Deacons, but that dioceses would be able to form them well. When speaking about spousal attendance for aspiring Deacons he argues that “Encouraging but not mandating spousal attendance leaves more room for younger couples to come forward and thereby enliven the diaconate in the diocese with not simply the wisdom of age but the vibrancy of youth.”

This book cuts to the quick and does much to reorient the conversation around the restored permanent diaconate back toward its true north: intimacy with the Christ who comes to bind the wounds of his beloved. Much here to ruminate on, much here to challenge you, much here to be thankful for, whether considering the diaconate or not.

This is a wonderful book that should be read by all deacons and men discerning whether they are called to diaconate ministry. I found it to be very thought-provoking and inspiring. The author focuses on the greater importance of the spiritual life of the deacon, his intimate relationship with the HolyTrinity, over what the deacon "does" in the parish where he serves. This is something that those of us already ordained need to be reminded of from time to time, because we can lose sight of this in the daily struggle to balance our responsibilities to family, work, and ministry.

Love what David Chang has brought together in Lucky Peach. I love pho and never would have thought about making it at home. Now I have some great recipes to tackle it, and have learned so much through this issue about the history and development of an iconic dish, and the differences between northern and southern approches, eh oh helps me to interpret the different phos I get at local shops. This is a great issue.

Letters from Alabama

Extremely interesting book. Why haven't I heard of this one before?
Fascinating look into the natural history of the ante-bellum South. His observations of extinct species like the Carolina Parakeet, Ivory-billed woodpecker, & Chestnut tree are priceless.

Pre Civil War Alabama from a outside view

Anyone interested in the rural south in the first half of the 19th century, particularly Alabama, would be fascinated by this book. The comments of an early natualist, steamboat travel, family life, hunting, and his reaction to slavery are priceless. If you were interested enough to read this review you need to read this book.

Important eye witness account of life in the formative years of Alabama

This fine book is one of few eye witness accounts of life in the formative years of the State of Alabama and important to any serious student of Alabama History.

"In 1838 Gosse taught eight months for Reuben Saffold, the owner of Belvoir plantation, near Pleasant Hill, Alabama.[8] Gosse studied and drew the local flora and fauna, assembling an unpublished volume, Entomologia Alabamensis, on insect life in the state.[9] He also recorded his negative impressions of slavery, later published as Letters from Alabama (1859)"
Gosse was a sophisticated and highly educated Englishman who became a very well known naturalist in England in later years and wrote several well known books.
Gosse gives us a glimpse into the day to day life on a working plantation in South Alabama. His primary interest is to record the natural flora and fauna of the area and he gives us sightings of several extinct things in the area such as the Carolina Parokeet . He gives us information on plantation daily life....slavery...riverboat travel.....a rare glimpse into life in Alabama in the early days. I cherish this book and highly recommend it to any Alabama history student. I recommend it in book form as part of a collection of Alabama history books.
The original work done by Gosse included beautiful hand colored drawings that were never published until recently and are not included in this particular book.
There is a recent publication of the hand colored drawings done by Gosse at this time duplicated in color as well as a good commentary on all of Gosse's work. Check it out on Amazon. Gary R Mullen is author. I highly recommend both books.

Best I.D. book on medals from the Vietnamese communist side

This book renders all other works on the subject obsolete. Big full color photos make proper identification of medals and ribbons simple. I believe any serious collector of Vietnam war militaria needs this book.

This is the story of Richard the Lionheart as told by himself, his mistress Blondelza (fictional), Mercadier of Fouquenbrun-Knight, Queen Eleanor, Berengaria, Princess of Navarre later Richard's wife, and Alexander the Monk. Each person, who, by the way really existed (with the exception of Blondelza and other minor characters), has their own chapter or book in which they give their personal view of Richard and his life and how these events affected both of them.
The horrible, gruesome battles and seiges of the Crusade are well defined here. Almost too much so, however, it gives a more realistic picture of what both sides suffered in the name of God. Richard is portrayed here as a complex prince and ruler who tries to do the right thing but being human sometimes fails in that endeavor.
It is a very worthwhile read and there are many interesting viewpoints from the most common of people, traveling entertainers to the Queen of England, Eleanor. Each offers unique insights as to what life must have been like in medieval times. This novel is out-of-print but should be found, read and treasured.

The Politically Correct King Richard the Lionhearted circa 1980.

I'm writing this review for all the people who saw this on Bookbub for free and might be tempted. I first read this book back in the 1980s and even then it was an accepted historical fact that King Richard was homosexual. However, Ms Rofheart decided to rewrite history and give him a female lover with a name similar to the young man who he was really in love with, a minstrel named Blondel. Richard did marry for the sake of the throne, but by all accounts in was a marriage of politics and without passion. The historical facts are far more interesting than this politically correct version and I assume the author sanitized the story to attract a larger audience who probably would not know (or want to know) the truth of King Richard the Lionhearted. So why 2 stars? Well, I didn't hate it and all these years later I still remember it (sort of)- I was stuck on an airplane without other options and the story moved along and was technically well written. I wish I could say there was a really great book about Richard the Lionhearted, but I think it has yet to be written or I have yet to find it.

Edited: I have added this edit to include what I wrote below in the comments (so you don't have to dig for it) to clarify my low grade of this book: This was not a book I would have recommended to a friend or probably even bothered to review at the time of my first reading it. The book was a diversion on a long, personally significant, airplane flight and that's part of the reason I remember it at all. I do recall thinking the story had all the depth of a medieval movie made in Hollywood, if Tony Curtis had played the part of King Richard and Janet Leigh was Blondelza. If people want to download it for free (per the BookBub price notice) I would say that is the correct price for this particular novel.

In my opinion, the best book ever written!!!

I don't think there is anything about this book that I didn't like so it will be hard to get it all in a few sentences, but I will try. The way that each major charactor in the story is given an individual story to tell makes the book even better than it would have been otherwise. I love the way the author gave the wonderful true life of Richard I even more excitement by adding a few fictional characters. It is nice to finally read a fairly true story and not be bored to tears. Quite the opposite, I could not put it down the first time I read it. I have read it several times now and have laughed and cried every time all over again. I could never praise this book enough.......YOU MUST READ IT!!!!!!!
