Seventeenth-century Tokyo is the setting for Rowland's debut novel, a murder mystery starring the Senior Police Commander in the district of Edo. Sano Ichiro, a samurai whose academic background puts him at odds with most of his peers, discovers two bodies in the Sumida River, a man and woman bound together in what appears to have been a shinju, or "double love suicide." The man is a peasant, the woman the high-born daughter of an important official. Told by his superior to close the case without an investigation, Sano, suspecting murder, determines to investigate on his own. He orders an illegal autopsy and learns that the victims did not drown but cannot make his discovery known. Amidst many tribulations, he uncovers a trail of corruption and intrigue that ultimately leads him to suspect a member of a royal family. Replete with convincing details, the setting's time and place provide lively and diverting passages; the plot, however, twists only occasionally before its fairly predictable, politically rooted resolution. Rowland crafts a competent mystery her first time out, shows sure command of her background material and demonstrates that she is a writer of depth and potential.

As samurai, Sano must obey or dishonor his father. The quest for justice, however, impels him to risk all to uncover the truth. His course causes more deaths and reveals the depravity of a powerful family that plots to assassinate the shogun. Sano is an unlikely, headstrong hero whose talk and stumbling actions endanger others. His repeated weighing of the samurai code of loyalty and duty versus the pursuit of justice slows the plot occasionally, but not seriously. The descriptions of the lives of townspeople, samurai, the privileged class, and inhabitants of the "pleasure district" in 17th-century Edo (Tokyo) are brutal, but rich and sensual, especially the Tea Ceremony and New Year celebrations. As a newly appointed yoriki (senior police commander), Sano Ichiro is expected to obey his superior's order to treat the deaths of an upper-class woman and a commoner as a shinju (ritual double suicide). Sano believes the two were murdered and doggedly continues to investigate, risking his job and his life. He gradually uncovers a plot against the shogun himself. The best part of this first novel is the splendid evocation of late 17th-century Edo. The descriptions of the stratified society, the details of everyday life, and the sights and sounds of the city that will later become Tokyo are vivid and compelling. Readers intrigued with unusual settings for their mysteries will enjoy this work. Others may not be able to ignore the paper-thin characterizations and the coincidence-strewn plot. The last paragraph leaves an opening for a sequel. Only large pop fiction collections need consider.

A Great Historical Detective Story

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and now I am hooked! 'Shinju' is a mystery about a supposed ritual double lovers' suicide (the title is the term that is used to refer to that act) that is in actuality a murder. Ichiro Sano, a young man recently appointed 'yoriki'(policeman) is assigned to a cursory investigation of what most of his colleagues and superiors view as a dishonorable and distasteful incident. Sano's takes his duties seriously, however, and almost loses his life -- and more importantly -- his honor in uncovering both a disturbing crime and a treasonous plot. Set against the backdrop of the Tokugawa Shogunate, this novel is educational as well as entertaining, and I really didn't know where the plot would take me as I read; the hero gets in some pretty dangerous situations. Rowland really paints a realistic picture of Japan in the 17th Century, with its dependence on personal obligation and honor. It's both frustrating and eye-opening for the reader to discover that although the hero knows 'whodunnit', his society prohibits him from bringing the guilty party (or in this case 'parties') to justice.

Fascinating history, mediocre writing & puzzle

Rowland is great at making 17th century Japan seem real, and goes into exquisite detail about the material (and, more crassly, moral) circumstances in which her characters live. That alone made the book worth reading, and made me interested in reading Bundori as a follow-up. However, Shinju has serious drawbacks. Anyone who reads mysteries regularly will have no trouble solving Shinju by halfway through the book. The main problem, though, is Rowland's ponderous writing. Her action scenes and urban descriptions are great; but anything about characters' thoughts and motivations gets wordy and dull very fast. Instead of letting readers figure out why characters respond as they do (except for the highly-scrutable inscrutable suspects) she beats to death the possibilities with lists of questions the characters are supposed to have flashing through their minds. In addition, no one moves a muscle in this story without Rowland reporting on its flexion. It's as if she do! ! esn't trust the readers to be as smart as she is. That's annoying. Shinju is a lovely historical tapestry, and compelling as a result. Frankly, I think Rowland should drop the mystery element (which is profoundly unsatisfying) and just write novels of 17th Century Japan. They would probably be great.

Interesting Setting, Less Compelling Mystery

A highly detailed series debut set in Tokyo (Edo) circa 1690. The detective is a newly appointed samurai police officer who quickly manages to piss off his boss and underlings by sticking his naively inquisitive nose into various matters, most notably, a ritual lovers' suicide he is ordered not to investigate. Of course our hero has an inner conflict which rages between duty and justice which battles most of the book, as he gets himself deeper and deeper in hot water. The mystery itself is nothing special, and relies on a villain who is more than slightly crazed. The fun in the book is in all the little details about urban Japanese life and customs of the era, as well as the political background. This is presented very fluidly and is well-woven into the plot.

I will give it 5 stars because it does it goes as far in depth as you'd expect (although it lacks any sort of guide which caters to LASO), and it does its job as a good looking, hard cover collector's edition. Fits in well next to my Metal Gear Solid V collector's guide, and will look even better alongside the Fallout 4 Vault Dweller's guide soon to come.

Epic guide of all time

Awesome hard cover book, with alot of halo history. It recieved a 5 star because the book, digital (exact copy of book) guide and patches are at the same leval of perfection as the game. I prefer to use digital copy over book to keep the book in great condition. Not dirty pages or worn binding.

Excellent introduction to the framework

I like Sencha and recognize how powerful of a tool it is, but it's not the easiest to learn if it's your first javascript framework. A lot about the documentation provided by Sencha directly seems to assume that the reader is already familiar with Sencha or a similar javascript framework.

Sencha Ext JS Bootcamp in a Book filled the gap of introduction-to-the-framework very well for me. There's still a bit you need to know before diving into the book (general javascript usage, general OOP concepts, some command line usage), but as far as Sencha itself the book does a fantastic job of getting you up and running. It answers a lot of the questions that the official documentation and tutorials left me with.

Definitely worth the purchase.

Training Class in a Book for Sure

First off, this book is a bargain. I first balked at the $99 price tag for a book, but this really isn't a typical book, it is truly a class in book form. I believe it is the same book FigLeaf would include with their training course. If you can learn by reading a book, this would be the best ExtJS book out there. Therefore, considering a training class would be $2000 or more, this book has real value.

I've read and skimmed a few other ExtJS books and none are as in-depth as this book. It is primarily useful to beginners, but even if you've been working with ExtJS it probably has value in filling in the gaps of knowledge (I've used ExtJS for a couple of years and found it informational). The author walks you through creating an application through "lecture" then labs. This includes using Sencha Cmd and a vast majority of the ExtJS framework, theming, as well as setting up you environment.

I wished that an ExtJS 6 version was available, but really the main thing missing would be the new Fashion theming and 'modern' i.e. Sencha Touch components. Otherwise, this book covers everything you'd need for creating MVVM apps for desktop browsers in ExtJS 6.

Complete tutorial on Ext JS 5

I needed to come up to speed quickly with Sencha's Ext JS, and the resources out there were pretty slim. This book is a complete workshop, and I found it to be invaluable.

Sencha has moved on to Ext JS 6, but I was able to use the knowledge I gained here, working with Ext JS 5 to get me over the learning curve, and upgrading was easy after that. I do recommend using the same version of the tools as the book uses. If you try to use it directly with v6, you might have a few challenges, as regards file locations within projects. But the bulk of it will still be great knowledge.

Somewhere within these pages are very unfathomable concepts of life and afterlife, other-dimensional forms of existence, alien technology, intelligent soul energy and all those troubling other theories and/or realities of the known universe (and beyond). It’s a “gentle heavy” work, and treads deep into still waters, to say so lightly. Traditional, alternative and even fringe mindsets will find themselves reading Cannon’s work with polar oppositional comprehension; that is to say that I, at least, found myself in awe as well as struggling within in an attempt to comprehend the unthinkable.

Even now, a week after concluding her work, I am still not quite sure as to what just happened to my own “acceptable” versions of little green men, karmic retribution and other lives potentially lived. Very much as Cannon herself had described of her own awakening to the material contained herein. It is a challenge where to put it all.

It was enough, however, for me to give Cannon another look into her other works with great anticipation. Steady as she goes is the rule here, especially with regard to some of the more winded transcriptions of the presented regression sessions. Where I end up after all this is anyone’s guess, but the ease and captivating narrative is at the very least entertaining. It’s at the very least unnerving.

It is also exciting of where all of us may be headed one day…maybe.

An interesting, and thought provoking read

This was an enjoyable book, covers a lot of topics that if you have an open mind to the use of Hypnotic Regression, and the possibility that ETS are not just simply flesh and blood entities, you will really find a lot of what is contained in this book interesting.
Cannon, is a good writer, as her phrasing and movement through the book is smooth and keeps your attention. She obviously has a great wealth of knowledge and experience in what she does and this can be felt throughout the book.
The couple small gripes that I have with this book, is that some of her cases that she presents get really long winded, there was more than a few times where I began to skim over some of her presented cases, where I was reading about the inside of a vessel, and how someone felt for the 3rd or 4th time. I understand that this repetition is done to prove validity, but it really felt by the third or fourth time that she was beating a dead horse, I really think some of the cases could have been summarized more, and cut down the page count on this book by a hundred pages easily.
Some reviewers give Cannon bad marks for being too trusting, or not discerning enough in her questioning, amongst other things. I do have to agree that some of the things that Cannon learns from her Hypnotic subjects, is a bit farfetched and taken at face value (by Cannon) a little too easily. But I am impressed with Cannon because she at least takes a solid stance on what her view is, and that's that ET's are trying to help us, and like the lab rats we do tests on, we aren't doing it because we are being evil, we are doing it to learn. It actually is refreshing, (if you agree with her side or not) to at least have a solid one side perspective be given. Granted I understand many authors on similar subjects like to avoid this to let the reader come to their own conclusions, but it can get rather annoying that after reading a book, you come out at the end with more questions and fewer answers. Take this as you will, just my opinion.
Overall, a very interesting book, especially from the side of Metaphysical Thought and Theory, as well as some "reasons" as to why the ETS have done some of things they have done, as well as why they have not come out to us publicly.
If the Metaphysical side of things is not your purview, or you at least can’t be open minded to them as far as this subject is concerned, I would avoid this book. If you are the former, then I think you will at least find this book thought provoking and worth your time and money.

SKIPPING THIS BOOK WOULD BE A BIG MISTAKE

I have watched Dolores Cannon's videos and learned a lot. However, by reading this book I truly have the background and the pieces filled in that gave me an understanding of the things she was saying. Just the information on our galactic neighbors is so eye opening. It has helped me with the question, "Why us?"

I now understand why this is the first book you should read. It's the basic foundation you need for other information to make sense. To skip this book would be a big mistake.
