Glaciers and ice sheets have been melting significantly during recent decades, posing environmental threats at local, regional and global scales. Remote sensing of glaciers began with terrestrial and aerial photography during the middle of the 20th century, but today the discipline embraces a large variety of data types from laser scanner data to very high resolution satellite imagery, which can be applied to the mapping of glacier changes in terms of area, surface zonation or thickness. This book highlights the history of the remote sensing of glaciers, the physics of glaciers and remote sensing of them, and focuses particularly on modern data and methods used by remote sensing specialists and glaciologists. The book presents examples of glacier research carried out, for example�in the Alps, Norway, Iceland, Caucasus, Patagonia, Rocky Mountains, Pakistan, Antarctica, New Zealand, and Svalbard.

About the Author

Petri Pellikka obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at the University of Helsinki, Finland, specializing in Physical geography and Development geography. He carried out his Ph.D. studies at the University of Munich, Germany and at the University of Oulu, Finland, on airborne video camera sensor calibration and its application in studies of forest phenology in the German Alps. Dr. Pellikka has been a professor of geoinformatics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki since 2002. He leads the GeoInformatics Research Group of 10 researchers and Ph.D. students at the Department of Geosciences and Geography. His current research activities are�on remote sensing of forest, land cover and land use changes in East Africa, particularly Kenya. He has published over 110 scientific papers and over 40 popular articles.

Gareth Rees studied Natural Sciences as an undergraduate, specialising in Physics, and Radio Astronomy for his PhD, at the University of Cambridge. Since 1985 he has been a member of the academic staff at the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), specialising in the application of spaceborne and airborne remote sensing techniques to the investigation of polar environments. He directs the Polar Landscape and Remote Sensing Group at SPRI. The work of this group includes field-based investigation of glaciers and ice caps in Svalbard and Iceland and laboratory-based studies of snow and terrestrial ice in other parts of the world including Siberia and the Caucasus Mountains. The group also has a major research focus on the dynamics of high-latitude vegetation (tundra and the northern part of the boreal forest) and its response to global climate change, and Dr Rees is the co-director of a core project of the International Polar Year that is investigating the Arctic treeline region. Dr Rees conducts frequent fieldwork in Svalbard and in northern Russia. He has published seven books and over 70 scientific papers.

A Triumph of Tragedy

Cured Meat is a difficult book to read, yet it's essential reading: a memoir from a brilliant young mind, Classically trained in ancient Greek with a fondness for Sophocles and Philoctetes, and also for the piano compositions of Liszt. Left largely alone by her parents, and trapped in an abusive relationship at 18, Polly walks the tightrope between light and dark, spending most of the book surrounded by human wreckage, yet transcending her situation. She narrates as Alice in the wonderlands of Soho, Mayfair, and elsewhere, an active and often willing participant in everything from hard drugs to prostitution, coming up for air every now and again to reconnect with Classics and with poetry. Hers is not a maudlin tale, and never devolves into self-pity, but instead shows a curious and resilient young woman who knows she can save herself if she wants to, and ultimately does. She's a survivor.

Perhaps the book's strongest elements lie in her recounting of being hospitalized in a New Haven, CT sanitorium. It's a harrowing and scathing critique of the US mental healthcare system where nothing is truly voluntary, and drugs rule. Pair that with more lighthearted (but never far from danger and destitution) adventures in the Grantham, UK countryside, with cross-dressers, and also with addicts, whores, and pimps, professors and classmates, barmen, friends, and quite often strangers from all corners of the globe, and you are left with a thrilling read, one that leaves you shaken and amazed that people like these exist and rule the night. I often found myself fearing for the author's life, her thoughts of suicide, her battles with depression and addiction, and her homelessness, and wanted to give her a hug or just a place to stay for as little or as long as she liked.

Trope's writing is often strong, fusing lucid (and lurid) imagery with her linear narrative, an odd (and welcome) mix of Homer and William S. Burroughs by way of Pynchon and Bret Easton Ellis. She is Orpheus and Odysseus, a hero of the Underworld. She is less than zero, yet comes back stronger. She seems at once to be in full control yet completely lost. Street- and book-smart, she presents her life as-is, unfiltered, and largely unapologetic. These things happened.

My main issue with the book is not with its author, but with its lax copy editing and typesetting, which jarred me back to reality, interrupting an engrossing and evocative read. Trope's publisher and editor could have done a lot more to serve her and her material better, tightening the narrative, encouraging additional storytelling (occasionally Trope glosses over some truly awful stuff), and emphasizing the Classically tragic nature of her suffering, and that of the characters around her. I hope that there will be a second edition, and that Trope's publisher will go farther in promoting the work not just as a slice-of-life, but rather as an Underworld adventure that draws in the elite clubs of Yale University, London's high society, higher education, and the mental health establishment as an indictment of all of these.

There is real caring in Trope's prose, and one can learn a lot about compassion from her, as well as what it means to be an addict, a sex worker, and mentally ill, ignored and used, scared and lonely (but rarely alone), but resolved, often at the last minute, to awaken, and to escape the Cyclops' cave with the lotus-eaters in pursuit.

Into and out of the abyss

Cured Meat is a dark, yet beautiful memoir about descending into the abyss. The narrative is broken and fragmented, bouncing between reality, dreams, and hallucinations. Which is what one would expect in a book about someone's unraveling. Polly has a strong and individual voice that is unapologetic and deeply poetic. By the end of the book I felt like I had been watching a prima ballerina pirouette on the edge of a straight razor. I truly look forward to any and all future works Ms. Trope has in store for us.

Sensory overload

When I was first contacted by Polly Trope (a pseudonym) she presented her book thus:

it's called "Cured Meat" and it's about crisis and mental illness, drugs, and sex work (cheerful, I know) -- a quite colourful memoir of survival in madness and disaster , and the low-life of rockers, dreamers and comedians (all v urban).
it's a mixture of narrative and poetic/dream-like more poetic interludes. A bit emo, come to think of it.

From the very first page the senses are bombarded with imagery and emotion. The reader is drawn into the darkest recesses of a mind that is as fragile as it is strong as we do a tango with mental institutions, drug addiction and prostitution.

Peppered throughout the stories are the actual journal entries of a beautiful mind, but tortured soul, sometimes written at a time of lucidity, others when the demons within are tearing the soul apart.

We get an emotional look at a now archaic mental health system, before a lot was known about the illness and the only answers involved hospitalization, ELT and drugs that left the taker as an unfeeling, unthinking, comatose shell of a human being.

We are given an uncensored view of the decline into hell that is heroin addiction, and the fight to regain ones self worth.

I was totally engulfed by this book. At times I needed to distant myself from it to process the emotion and feelings that were overwhelming me. Each time however, I was drawn back into it to continue the dance.

Highly Over-rated!

The photographs in this book are pleasant enough, but the information is frequently incorrect. Coles and Budwig are following up their previous poorly-penned book with more of the same. Bead research is accomplished by people who dedicate years to this pursuit. we hear about all the great things Victor can do

I'm not actually quite sure how I feel about the "hidden" nature of Victor's depiction in a wheelchair. Through the entire book, we hear about all the great things Victor can do, and that is good, that is positive, but we don't see that Victor is in a wheelchair until that last image? As if we need a little punch, a little challenge to our assumptions? I would much rather the book show Victor's wheelchair and all the things he can do, at the same time, rather than trying to "prove a point" about our preconceived notions.

I think, if the artist hadn't tried to be so "clever" with that bit, I'd have given this book a 4. 5-star picture books are a bit rare for me (and mostly focus on LGBT issues, really), so a 4 is still high praise. It means the art and story is fine, though not to the level of me expecting them to win a Caldecott. It's an okay book, one I'd recommend to someone if they needed a book on that subject, but not a genre-defining release.

Don't be so afraid to show differently-abled children. Hiding them, whether to make a point or just to avoid controversy, does nothing to help actual people, and only has a small potential to help your sales. At least in 2004, it might have, before Amazon reviews were so common.

Bilingual/Disabilities

Synopsis: Dominic tells about all the things he does with his pal Victor and he portrays Victor to be a great friend. The two boys, Dominic and Victor do lots of fun things together. They look up at the clouds and Victor makes up stories about them. Victor says that they look like dragons, rocket ships and the pyramids in Mexico. He says, "My Pal Victor, tells great jokes." For example one of Victor's jokes was "If you mix a parrot and a pickle together what do you get?" Answer: "A pickle who wants a cracker." Victor goes to Dominic's baseball games to cheer for him. The boys go swimming. Victor tells scary ghost stories. Dominic tells how they love to ride rollercoasters together. Most importantly, Victor likes Dominic just the way Dominic is.

Evaluation: This story is realistic contemporary fiction. It is written in both Spanish and English. On every page English is on the top and Spanish is underneath it. Dominic and Victor are both Hispanic. Victor is handicapped. He's in a wheelchair. However, the reader does not see his wheelchair in the illustrations until the last page, and nothing about him being handicapped or different is in the text. Bertrand portrays Victor as a child who can do everything any child can do. He can even swim! The jokes in the story are slightly lame, but to children they may be funny. The answers to the jokes can be found on the last page along with vocabulary translated from English to Spanish. The theme is different from many other books with handicapped children in them being the fact that most books are from the perspective that the handicapped child is happy to be accepted whereas in this book the non-handicapped person is happy to be accepted just the way he is by a handicapped person. My Pal, VICTOR won the Schneider Family Book Award in 2005.

A feminist counterpart to Iron John--or, how ``a healthy woman is much like a wolf.'' Est‚s, a Jungian analyst, believes that a woman's wholeness depends on her returning to the sources of her repressed instinctual nature. To illustrate the ways of the ``wild woman,'' the author draws on myths, legends, and fairy tales from a vast and eclectic range of traditions. This collection of stories may well be the most valuable element of the book, which otherwise reads like unedited transcripts of the workshops Est‚s leads to encourage women to return to their ``feral'' roots. Each story demonstrates a particular aspect of woman's experience--relationship, creativity, anger, spirituality, etc. Est‚s finds evidence in the most diverse tales of the necessity for women to reclaim their wildness. The precise nature of this wildness is difficult to fathom, but, at best, it seems to include a genuine capacity to access feelings and to accept one's contradictions, while, at worst, it appears to amount to the kind of self-indulgence that prevailed during the ``me'' generation. Est‚s claims that her book is for every woman, ``whether you be spicy or somber, regal or roughshod''; but her underlying assumption that every woman is free to abandon what holds her back seems ignorant of social and economic realities. My Go To Book for healing the injured female within

this book is my go to staple to feed my female soul. if anyone can get it right and deep it is Clarissa. to me, she is like the female version of Joseph Campbell. she totally unfolds the female archetypal characters and souls. if you want a book with meat and bones that talks about the issues of the female character and her relationships with other women ... within her family ... who betray her or abuse her, abandon her or neglect her ... and you have had that happen to you and you need a healing through profound understanding ... then get this book, read it and reread it and digest every bit of hit because there is nothing but soul food in here! thank heaven, God and angels for Clarissa. she is a national jewel and anything she creates speaks to me and i think it will speak to you as well.

She speaks to my ancient old soul. My feminine divine healing mama goddess just wants to step in to this book occasionally like Superman goes to his Fortress of Solitude. Its healing, her words are so relevant and speaks to me. I mean, its so well written in my opinion, and I do enjoy it. I think you would too! my soul certainly shines when I re-read any chapter and I always go back to the ducks and the swan and suddenly I feel right at home just being me again!

I read a few pages, then go away and think about what I've read, digesting the pearls of wisdom C.P.Estes puts out for all to read. I highly recommend it to women who want more clarity about their "wildish" nature.

About worth the reading time and cost

One thing that I have found about books that are written by linguists (on whatever topic) is that they tend to be just a bit too long. (I have John McWhorter in mind. I've read two of his books-- Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America and Doing Our Own Thing: The Degradation Of Language And Music And Why We Should, Like, Care) and have found that they were at least twice as long as they needed to be.

Problems:

1. If this book had been permitted to be expanded into a full length book, it would have joined the pantheon of Bloviating Books Written By Linguists. Even as I read it, I could see where the editor had to go through with his/ her blue pen and cut out a lot of the waffle. When the author started with his biological metaphors, he really did get quite wordy and a lot of what he said could have been truncated to 2 or 3 paragraphs.

2. Since the author used biological metaphors (with which he went WAY TOO FAR), it made me wonder: "Is there even an issue here?" We all know that more species have existed and have died out than currently exist (1) and that it is perfectly natural that species died out in the churn of evolution (2). So if these same things happen in the context of languages, then *so what*?

3. The author talked about the loss of knowledge that goes with the extinction of languages. But then the question comes up: "If 50% of languages are on their way out, does that mean that 50% of knowledge is on the way out with them?" Also: If knowledge is really good and useful, then it does not depend on language. Did it matter that Il Principia was written in Latin and that no one speaks it anymore? The concepts have been translated into as many different languages as are useful.

4. The author also has a very rosy picture of multilingualism (in a book that I thought was supposed to be about some of the technical details of languages). He gives examples of where groups of people can get along speaking multiple different languages, but it's *not always that easy*. (French Canada. Africa. Sri Lanka [!]). And what was the point of getting into a series of value judgments in a book that was supposed to be descriptive (and not prescriptive)?

5. The book fell apart toward the end. It just got.....babbly. About midway through, the author promised to take up the age-old "Is Chinese a language or a dialect?" question at some length, but he just didn't. His discussion of "internal" vs. "external" concepts of a language was not very clear. The book could have lost about 25% of its length with no diminishment.

In spite of all that, there were some good take away messages.

1. We got an idea of how many languages there are in the world--along with some slightly strained analogies to Biology. (6,909 is a reasonable working number.)

2. We got a taste of the techniques that are used in studying the divergence of languages.

3. There were some answers as to why languages diverge over time-- no matter how much effort any academy/ government might make to keep them intact.

4. 25% of the 6909 languages have less than 1,000 speakers and over half of them are headed for very likely extinction within the century.

5. We were introduced to some basic concepts, such as "phonology"/"morphology"/"syntax."

Verdict: (Barely) worth the time (3 hours/ 1-2 afternoons) and worth the money ($6).

Very good for a very short introduction...

I don't know much about languages or linguistics, but his caught my eye after reading a few pages online. Just being able to answer the questions "how many lanuages are there" served as a good launching point for the text.

I was hoping for more examples of language differences; what is it that varies most between languages, perhaps more specifics. But, that's jsut me. The writing about "signed" languages was really fascinating. I gues I wanted a little more depth, but then, this cacn only be a very short introduction. I'll need to look into some of the references for more detail.

Perhaps *the* book on sushi

No other work that I have ever laid my hands on has been such a masterful treatment of sushi, unless that work was a hefty tome that would end up languishing on a shelf. This book covers everything anyone from a beginner to a master would need, and does it in a total size that you can pack with you on a trip or in any kitchen.

What you get:

-History. It makes a massive difference to your sushi appreciation, and your cooking, when you know where sushi came from. Vinegar-laden rice began as a preservation method, protecting fresh coastal fish for inland transport. Tips like these provide insight into why you prepare sushi the way you do, that no simple ingredient list can ever convey.

-Information. Not only do you get a breakdown of traditional and modern ingredients and tools, but also thorough breakdowns of why you use what items and what the pitfalls may be- for example, how the "wasabi paste" in your local market probably isn't wasabi.

-Building blocks. It's been said that you can put basically anything into a sushi roll, so where a book really needs good focus is on preparing the rice, technique for rolling, and generally everything before the "recipe" of what to throw in the roll. This book includes all the building blocks in the necessary detail.

-Plenty of advanced tips. Individual butcher diagrams of common fish and how to prepare them. Recipes to put your fundamentals into practice are delicious and well placed, from the simple to the nearly impossible. Tool lists include all of the rare, authentic, and historic items so even a master chef might find a piece to experiment with.

Simply put, if you want to make or enjoy sushi, you need this book now. No other work is even close to being this concise, while maintaining the proper depth of information.

Loved the book

I'm a sushi beginner and based on other people's review I purchased this book. I cooked sushi rice about 10 times now and it came out perfect every time (and I'm not using the rice cooker)! My rolls look and taste just like at a sushi bar. Great instructions and illustrations for everything: from all types of fish to necessary equipment and sushi making instructions. This book has what you'll need to learn how to make, serve and enjoy delicious and beautiful sushi. However, keep in mind that this book only mentions soy and tamari souses. I had to ask my local sushi shef the names of my favorite sauces he used on my sushimi and maki rolls: i.e. unagi (eel) and ponzu souses. Overall, I am very pleased with the book and literally cooking something new couple of times a week.
