The story is so bad that it is nearly funny in an unintentional way

The story is so bad that it is nearly funny in an unintentional way.

Ten years before the story begins, Summer was engaged to the man she loved. Then her hard-hearing aunt, queen of gossip, tells her that rumor has it that Brad, her fianc�, has kissed a girl under the mistletoe (as if that was such a big deal!). Our brain-damaged heroine breaks up with the love of her life without giving him the chance to explain himself! She begins a career in modelling and dates another man who seems as stupid as her. They could therefore be a good match but she wants to break up. Without even popping the question, he buys her an engagement ring and Summer passively accepts the situation because, maybe, that is a sign that God has sent her this man! Now, there is nothing wrong with trusting God but that does not mean that you cannot use your brain and your heart to know what you want in your life: grow up, heroine!

Summer is supposed to spend Christmas in California with her new fianc� and his parents, which she dreads. Luckily, the plane that she should take to go the California is cancelled due to a storm and the only flight not cancelled is to Kissing Bridge (!) her hometown in Vermont. Despite the terrible tragedy which happened 10 years ago (remember, a guy kissed a girl under the mistletoe, a real tragedy indeed!) she takes this plane and surprises her mother and her aunt who are happy to see her but nonetheless seem to be in some excruciating crisis. Has one of them discovered that she has cancer or lost her job or what exactly is the problem? The problem - sorry, the tragedy - is that the mother has not won the cookie competition, she is only second! How heart-breaking is that!

Ok, I won't tell the end because you get the gist. The characters are shallow and terribly immature. The story is practically non-existent and idiotic. And the language! Even I, a non-native English speaker (sorry for any mistake in this comment by the way) could spot many mistakes. The worst of all is: "could have went" (aaaargh!). And the author does not seem to know the difference between fianc� (a man) and fianc�e (a woman), or between "envious" (feeling or showing envy) and "enviable" (arousing or likely to arouse envy). There are other examples but there is no point in listing them.

Reading a romance is something you do to relax and take a vacation from your brain, but this story did not relax me at all, it just irritated me because of its low quality. And my brain, which can accept mildly hard-to-believe and not-so-original plots in a romance protested strongly at the sloppiness and sheer stupidity of this one.

I knew Linda to be an excellent writer from her outstanding non-fiction books on frequencies and law of attraction, so I was looking forward to her creative storytelling. "Christmas Kisses…" is just what I had expected and hoped-for: A delightful, light-hearted romp through the classic challenges of finding true love, amidst family quirks and Holiday Season homecomings. Set in the beautiful, picture-postcard Vermont town of Kissing Bridge Mountain at Christmas time, if you like LOVE, hot chocolate and cookies! -- and who doesn't?! -- you'll love this fun escape... Enjoy! :)

Sci Fi meets History in a Texan's Dream-Come-True

A wealthy oil tycoon sends a heavily armed band of mercenaries back in time to aid in defending the Alamo from General Santa Ana's 5,000 plus man army hoping to gain prime, oil rich real estate in the present. Action is never in short supply as thousands of Mexican Army regulars hopelessly assault the fort with black powder rifles and bayonettes only to be met with automatic weapon fire, claymore mines, and seasoned 20th century soldiers. The setting is historically very accurate, and the ending is both a surprise and a moral wrapped into one.

I remember the Alamo; I forgot about this book.

I'm not much of a history buff so, despite all those history classes I had in school, the stuff I remember most about the Battle of the Alamo came predominantly thru pop culture osmosis, thru tall tales of Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie and thru that John Wayne movie and Marty Robbins's riveting song "Ballad of the Alamo". The Battle of the Alamo took place between February 23 and March 6, 1836, with Santa Anna's Mexican army, numbering in the thousands, laying siege and eventually overrunning the overmatched troops of volunteers defending the old Franciscan mission-turned-garrison. One historical account states that on March 1, 1836, thirty-three people managed to fight their way thru the Mexican forces and into the safety of the mission. Science-fiction writers Kevin Randle & Robert Cornett then take this one factual nugget and posit a neat time-travel scenario.

REMEMBER THE ALAMO! was written in the 1980s and is the first entry into Randle and Cornett's Time Mercenaries series, which consist of three novels in all (the other two are Remember Gettysburg and REMEMBER LITTLE BIG HORN!). In REMEMBER THE ALAMO!, two events happen to set the stage for the story. One: the research department of a powerful American oil company discovers that time travel is possible. Two: Just south of the Mexican border, vast oil fields have been recently unearthed, of which possession, by historical claim, falls to Mexico. But then the director of the oil company schemes of a way to seize control of the oil. But it involves the rewriting of history. It calls for a different outcome in the Battle of the Alamo.

A small band of mercenaries and accidental companions, consisting mostly of Vietnam vets and armed with modern weaponry, are tricked into time-travelling back into 1836, with the objective of winning the Alamo. This time-displaced group happens to number thirty-three people.

I'm not a history buff, but I love the time travel genre, love the concept of a man (or woman) of our times being catapulted into a different era and forced to apply his 20th Century sensibilities to navigate his way thru things. And seeing thru the modern-day character's eyes, I tend to get even more involved with the historical backdrop. Kevin Randle & Robert Cornett do a good job of making the Alamo passages feel authentic, tightly enough weaving their story in and out of the actual historical events. They even cover that fabled moment in which Lt. Colonel Travis drew a line in the dirt.

But the modern mercenaries don't right away get plonked into 1836. A sizable chunk of the book goes into things like the science behind time travel, the selection and training process of the mercenaries, and the introduction and somewhat of a fleshing out of the two lead characters, group commander Robert Brown and lovely fellow soldier-of-fortune Jessie Thompson.

Thing is, I wouldn't call this a consistently juicy read. A dry, clinical tone creeps into quite a few passages. REMEMBER THE ALAMO! probably would've benefited from being a longer book, because I got to the end feeling that there should've been more to it. I definitely wanted more of the residents of 1836 coping with the notion that in combat women really are as capable as the menfolk. I guess it makes sense that Brown's crew would keep to itself, but I was hoping for more interaction between the Vietnam vets and their fellow besiegeds. Also, it's perhaps a bit too cavalier, the reactions of Lt. Colonel Travis and his 19th Century volunteers towards the superiority of Brown's wondrously advanced arsenal.

Ultimately though, I think that REMEMBER THE ALAMO! is worth checking out. But if you're into reading about military sci-fi adventures, there are other works I'd recommend before this one: S.M. Stirling's Island of Nantucket series, David Drake's Belisarius series, Jerry Pournelle's Janissaries, Eric Flint's 1632, and stuff by Harry Turtledove. REMEMBER THE ALAMO! is a neat enough adventure, and I like that, here, there are consequences to those who would time travel. Within the confines of its sci-fi premise, the story is kept rooted in reality and plausibility. There's blazing action near the end, as the men in the Alamo hold off one horrific incursion, with several of the mercenaries becoming casualties. But, mindful of the perils of altering history, the mercenaries aren't allowed to cut all the way loose, and so you don't get an overwhelming sense that it's a cakewalk for these guys. It's actually a kick to the vanity, what happens to lead character Robert Brown during the big fire-fight. And, as mentioned, the book ends with my feeling that there should've been more, just more to the story.

Fiction has to make sense.

The ending made perfect sense as if this were the actual account of the battle.

The main characters were a bit static from time to time, while the Texans are very flat, hardly any depth at all, right down to the cliche coon skin cap. I would not have been surprised if one of them would have said "lets head them off at the pass"

But it does have some good points, with a plot twist here and there.

As I read this book, the first book I reviewed soon after I declared myself as being a Book Reviewer “Searching4MrRight.com” by Rene D. Schultz, came into my mind. Read this book, and see how many of her dates had been similar to ones you had experienced yourself.”

I feel this book has been written in an informative as well as an entertaining manner; which added to the enjoyment of my in reading it. The book addresses the issues most women are concerned about when it comes to the “The Dating Game.” The information this book seems to indicate it has been researched quite well, and the exercises it contains are quite useful is realizing what you need to know in order to attract your Mr. Right.

While this is a book which can easily be read in a single sitting of about an hour, you should reduce your reading speed so you won’t miss anything the author has to say, so read it a second time. I’d read this book twice over the course of three hours since I’d received the book, which included a break to have my dinner.

I was about to give this book 4 STARS, but how could I forget this book had been written by a MALE with a MALE’s POV; which is why I’m giving it 5 STARS.

A witty, well-written & spot on glimpse into every woman's psyche, this book is extremely engaging. Everyone who reads it will certainly identify with almost all the points made & explained within these pages. The long-term honest advice on how to better one's true self will facilitate common sense changes within your life & give you the ability & courage to begin a real long-lasting relationship with not just yourself, but someday soon, with your perfect match. Highly recommendable, I hope someday we may read more from this author! Thank you!

Powerful advice for much more than just finding Mr. Right

Pros:
I was skeptical at first: a dating book for women written by a man? This raised all sorts of sexism red flags for me, but I'm so glad I looked past this initial judgment and read the book because I loved it! After finishing it, I felt like I had just been to an incredibly productive therapy session. I personally read it from the angle of how to find meaningful friendships rather than "Mr. Right" and I felt the advice the book had to offer would help improve all of my relationships - romantic or otherwise. I'm excited to start implementing some of the advice and see the positive changes in my life.

Cons:
I wasn't a huge fan of the chapter on taking care of your body. While I agree that this is an important part of self-love, I feel that women are bombarded with this message, and typically in negative ways, so I felt that this chapter was unnecessary and distracted from the really important messages in the book. I also could have done without some of the lines that sounded like scare tactics (if you don't read this book you'll end up alone forever), even though I think they were meant to be humorous.

Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to anybody - male or female, single or happily married - as I think it has some really important messages. Will it help you find Mr. Right? Probably. Will it help you be a happier, more fulfilled person? Definitely.

For modelers, train buffs and anyone who wants to know!

John Armstrong is both a railroader and a railroad modeler. He wrote "Railroad: What it Is, What it Does" to help modelers create realistic layouts by understanding how a real railroad operates. But it doesn't matter if you're a modeler: whatever your reason, if you want to know how railroads operate, then this book is for you!
Armstrong covers every aspect of railroading. Starting with history as far back as the Roman Empire, he surveys the evolution of rail transport from mining cars on wooden tracks through the "big steel rail". He covers the pros and cons of flat wheels on flanged track versus flanged wheels on flat track, stone ties versus timber ties, steel rails versus iron rails, and all of the engineering issues that go into building a stable, long-lasting track--and that's just in the first few chapters.
From there he explains the economic issues that go into deciding where to run the track, how to route the trains, and everything that goes into establishing a railroad operation.
Finally he covers all the details: how a consist is put together; the various cars and their construction; the railroad workers and their various jobs.
This is one of the few books that leaves me feeling like I know all about the subject. It's incredible how he packs so much knowledge into these few pages! He obviously knows, and loves, his subject. And he writes with a storyteller's flair, so it's more like a novel than a text--I was sorry when it was finished!
Do yourself a favor. If you have any interest in trains whatsoever, get this book. You'll read it more than once.

This is a great book for any beginning student of American Sign Language. The pictures, together with very specific descriptions, make understanding how to form each sign very simple. This is one of the best books on the subject that I have ever found.
