Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red is a novel in verse, the author's first. A classicist by profession as well as a poet, Carson has drawn on antiquity for her cast, updating the myth of Geryon and Herakles. In the original version, of course, Herakles killed the red-skinned, winged Geryon. In Carson's very contemporary retelling, he merely inspires, but does not return, the monster's passion. By choosing Geryon as her central character, Carson can bring up the questions of existence as if they hadn't been asked before. After all, the monster's instincts have not been numbed by civilization. Fires twist through him. We feel the pain of learning the most elementary things, and then the volcanic intensity that comes with that more advanced thing, love. Yet Carson doesn't so much tell the story of Geryon's love as mediate his very being through semiological surfaces: cafes, video stores, lipstick, a library where he shelves government documents with a "forlorn austerity, / tall and hushed in their ranges as veterans of a forgotten war." Carson seldom satisfies herself with an image of the world. Instead she atomizes the world, leaving it broken down, refracted, and glinting. At times her verbal pyrotechnics manage to render pure energy: A little button at the end of each range activated the fluorescent track above it.

Wistful yet whimsical, offhand yet intense, funky yet erudite (Carson, a classics professor at McGill, grounds this work in ancient Greek myth), this is a reading experience like no other.

The title says autobiography; the subtitle, novel; and an inner title page reads "A Romance." Go with the last, for Carson recasts the Greek legend of Geryon, the red, winged monster that Herakles killed during his tenth labor. Names, wings, and some mythical details remain, but the setting is contemporary. Geryon, 14, meets Herakles, 16, and it's love at first sight. Life separates them, but they meet again when Geryon, now 22, literally runs into Herakles in Buenos Aires. Herakles and a colleague (and lover), scouting volcanoes for a film, whisk Geryon to the Andes, where his wings may cause him to be taken for an immortal. There the story breaks off. The start of another fantasy trilogy? Hardly, for although we know the story's end, it is not in the source, an ancient poem that now exists only in fragments. Instead, Carson interviews the poet, Stesichoros (circa 630^-555 B.C.), about his vision (he may have been blinded by Helen of Troy). Narratively, philosophically, humorously, a dazzling performance. What will you see when you allow yourself to disappear into the folds of the Autobiography of Red? What will you remember?

It must be a question of perspective. For me, it's as if I am standing outside a window looking in, and as I read, it is from the perspective of a mother of sons. Certain pieces linger -- Geryon's observation of stones at the beginning of the story- Carson has a unique ability to capture through mere glimpses the honesty and beauty of a child's understanding of his relationship to the world around him, trust in his brother because that's how the world should work in the mind of a 5 year old child; Geryon and his mother enjoying their Tuesday night routine- Geryon's mother's appreciation and validation of his sculpture autobiography; and perhaps what still pulls at my heart is what Carson was able to convey in the baby-sitting chapter- Geryon's retreat when his mother leaves and his springing to life with her return.

As I read the novel, I had to force myself not to judge, but to observe; it was easier the second time through. Still, my heart aches for Geryon, and his vulnerability. Carson beautifully captures Geryon's plight "outside and inside." My chest still tightens as I recall Geryon's struggle as he is left to fend for himself, first by his brother's apathy, then by his brother's violence, the cruelty of love lost, and finally the cost of his freedom.

"Who can a monster blame for being red?"

My heart aches for Geryon as he searches for meaning and an understanding of the distance between himself and the ones he loves, and his place in time and space.

Alice Munro captured the sentiment best: "this book is amazing -- I haven't discovered any writing in years so marvelously disturbing."

This book was not my cup of tea. I read it for a class, but if it wasn't for the class, who knows if I'd ever pick this book up. Mainly, I don't understand it, but maybe I'm just not smart enough.

Best listen to a few episodes of their podcast first as full enjoyment requires hearing the words in their voice. Likely, you are a fan. Thus, you will know much of the contents of this book. I did. But it is a great pleasure to add more depth and the presentation is well written, funny, and insightful. Well worth it.

Eyestrain for the Visually Challenged

I ordered this book from Amazon and received it for a very reasonable price (considering the original list price was $54.99). Firstly, this is laid out in a step by step tutorial format. That's cool because you really get a sense of the process, but as a reader it didn't engage me. I deserve some of the blame because I should have known that a classroom book - a tutorial really - is not the way I prefer to learn. It's like being led by the nose. I prefer to read an overview and explanation of a topic or feature, take some pertinent notes, and then go into Photoshop to give it a whirl. Having learned via the step by step method in Excel class, I know you become too focused on the book. For me, it's better to immerse myself in the program, and consult the book for specific topics or problem solving.

Now onto the major problem. Inside this book are selected portions of text offering specific and important information presented in a text box - that's good - but what does the publisher do? They go and print the text inside the box in a pitch distinctly SMALLER than the regular text and deposit it on a medium brown color background, making it very hard to read! As someone who is already visually challenged and only getting more so, this presents a real problem. Seriously, the text in 10 point, and that's basically the size of your average footnote. When I first flipped through this book, I saw this was a problem immediately. Yes, I can read it but not without serious effort. Publisher, you get a slap on the wrist!

Much prefer "Photoshop CS2 Studio Techniques" by Ben Willmore. This book is so well written and highly informative w/ many excellent tips (and I've only gotten to p. 50). I can peruse a chapter or topic and then try some of the tips for myself, instead of plodding ahead step by step. Learning style is a personal issue so for others this not may be the way that's easiest for you. And although I worked w/ Photoshop for a year or two (so I'm hardly an expert), I can see how "Photoshop CS2 Studio Techniques" might not be good for those first starting out w/ no knowledge whatsoever.

In summary, I recommend "Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book" for those with 20/20 (or better) eyesight just jumping in the pool who need someone to hold their hand.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book

I recently aquired Adobe's Photoshop CS2 to add to my digital photography skills and learn how to repair and enhance my work. Was I shocked to open it up and find that there was little to nothing I could do with it. I needed help to get started. So I ordered Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book and haven't been disappointed.

The book took me from nowhere to reasonably comfortable with Photoshop in a matter of days. The lessons assume that you are a beginner with Photoshop and cover the most used features in an eye opening and easy manner. The print is easy to read and the example photos are excelent. Included is a tutorial CD with lessons and examples that leave you with a new confidence as you move through the material. Each lesson covers a single topic and lessons become more complex as you progress. The topics are organized in such a way as to make the book useable as a reference and to allow the reader to jump ahead (after the first six or so lessons) to topics more interesting or relevant to the readers interest.

Although the volume is almost 500 pages and is easy to follow, it does not attempt to cover all features of the program and be everything to everone. It left me comfortable with the the basic skills and the knowledge that there are texts available with more depth on the various aspects of Photoshop. With that said, I am very satisfied with my purchase and recommed it with a 5 star rating.

UGH! Frustrating and too project driven.

I imagine this book would be fine for someone who has never used Photoshop, and just wants to be walked through a tiny bit of the program. This was a required text for a graphics class on electronic imagery, and I found it to be frustratingly limiting, to say the least.

For instance, one project has you going into a folder to access the background and other images for a collage. This is fine if that is what you want to do, but what if you want to find your own background, add your own images, or heaven forbid, explore some of the possibilities with the huge selection of tools Photoshop offers? This book covers just a tiny portion of a drop in the proverbial bucket, and I found myself supplementing this text with SEVERAL other books, as it is a very "think inside the box" kind of text. There are a myriad of ways to do things within the Photoshop program. (Just one of the great joys, in my opinion, of working with Photoshop) I don't believe this book in any way, shape, or form, relays that to the reader.

If you are looking for a good introductory text for Photoshop, keep looking! This one is sadly lacking!
